Chapter 1: DAY 1
~A Standard Life~
A Collection of Cupcake Stories
Day 1
It is the Burg wedding of the century. The man who owns the most hairy ass in Trenton and the woman who finally wants to settle down and pop up a lot of babies are going to tie the knot after all these years of on-and-off cheap cliché soap opera. It looks like God himself approves of this marriage. The weather is perfect. The flower arrangement is elegant. The cello and the Yamaha keyboard are beautifully played in harmony. The church is crowded with excited and happily chatting guests. The groom's mother is trying all she can to stop her crazy mother-in-law from putting the infamous Eye on whoever wearing pink, and the bride's mother is all smile and happy tears.
The family and friends of both parties give a collective cheer as the tall, dark and extremely hairy groom walks to the alter with a big bright smile. Minutes later, the bride shows up in a lovely, respectable creamy wedding dress approved by both mothers. The quests then dutifully say "Wow!" at the same time as if they have never seen a more beautiful bride. 10 minutes later, the bride is officially married to the man who molested her and lots and lots of little girls in his father's dark dirty smelly garage when he was only 8. Everybody stands up and claps as the bride and groom walk down the aisle together as a couple, and row by row the guests follow the newly-wedded out of the church to see them off to their honeymoon. They smile heartily—some of the more sentimental old ladies start weeping—and wave goodbye to the happy couple.
The grinning groom gets in the driver's seat and turns the key, and ignites the car bomb placed by one of his precious Cupcake's crazy old skips and blows his brand new Ford Fiesta up into an insanely huge fireball. Yes, both of them die along with the car on the spot. But at least they die together, as husband and wife.

~Till Death Do We Apart~

Chapter 2: DAY 2
~A Standard Life~
A Collection of Cupcake Stories
Day 2
The woman who finally, finally decides to settle down and pop up lots and lots of babies wakes up to a most powerful urge to cook something spicy for the very hairy man who molested her and hundreds and hundreds of innocent little girls in his father's dark dirty smelly garage when she was only 6. She jumps out of bed, runs out of the door, drives all the way to the weekend farmers' market, and comes back into the kitchen and immediately starts cooking.
The very hairy man looks on proudly with a big, happy smile. He always knows without a trace of doubt that she has it in her to become a most perfect and obedient housewife. Half an hour later, they sniff the heavenly aroma of the hot steaming wild mushrooms and tomato lasagna—his favorite dish of all time—in front of them, drool, and dig in. And all of a sudden, they grasp hold of their throats with both hands, make terrible choking noises, crumble to the floor, twitch, froth and convulse uncontrollably for a few second, and die at the same time.
Too bad the weekend farmer who sold her the wild mushrooms has no idea how to tell the world's most poisonous mushrooms from safe edible ones. But at least they die together, as future husband and wife.
End of Day 2
~In Sickness And In Health~

Chapter 3: DAY 3
~A Standard Life~
A Collection of Cupcake Stories
Day 3
The woman who suddenly decides she needs to settle down and start popping up babies like the Octopus Mom wakes up on a cloudy morning to a powerful urge to cook something tasty for the very, very hairy man who took her virginity and walked away with a smirk instead of "Thank you" or a backward glance. She jumps out of bed, runs out of the door, drives all the way to the nearest supermarket, and comes back into the kitchen and immediately starts washing and chopping.
The very, very hairy man looks on happily with a big proud smile. He always knows one day she will wake up from all her impossible and stupid dreams and embrace her true identity as a most obedient, traditional wife. He has every intention to keep her barefoot and pregnant for the rest of her life, and oh yes, he plans to start realizing his dream right after this hearty meal. His smile widens the moment she puts the large deep frying pan she just bought on the stove and pours in bottles of oil. She's making assorted deep-fried seafood and pizzas as main course and deep-fried Twinkies and TastyKakes as dessert. All his favorite!
They both frown in confusion as she turns on the stove and nothing happens. She tries several times but still can't light the stove, she turns to him for help but sees the dark, impatient look on his face instead. No. She would rather die than disappoint him. Frantically she throws open drawers after drawers and finally puts on a relieved smile as she finds a pack of matches. She knows he's hungry, so she immediately jumps into action and strikes a match. The lovely cozy two story house then erupts into a ultra huge fireball, and neither of them survives the fire.
Too bad they didn't know the gas line is leaking. But at least they die together, as would-be husband and wife.
End of Day 3
~In Joy And In Pain~

Chapter 4: DAY 4
~A Standard Life~
A Collection of Cupcake Stories
Day 4
She wakes up one day and hears the ancient calling. She gives in to her cave woman instinct and decides to take the path generations after generations of obedient and uncomplaining women took without questioning. It's her job to cook his meals. It's her duty to clean his house. It's her honor to wash, to iron, to mend and to fold his clothes. It's her life's meaning to take care of all his needs and pop out a baby every year. So she bows to his wishes. She quits her job. She forgets her dreams. She surrenders her freedom, lets go of her independence, and hands herself to him.
She smiles when he likes her pasta. She pales when he doesn't likes her cannoli. She apologizes when the babies disturb his sleep. She cooks his meals. She washes and iron and mend and fold his clothes. She cleans the house. She satisfies his needs. She pops out a baby every year. She pales when one night he says she's getting fat and unattractive. She apologizes when one morning he orders her to stop bothering him with everyday trifles and neighborhood gossips. She weeps when one afternoon he blames her for their children's wrong doings. She crumbles to the floor and cries her heart out when one dawn she finally, finally admits to herself that he has found someone else.
She thinks of her forsaken dreams. She thinks of the untaken path. She thinks of the life she didn't choose. She wants to regret her foolishness. She wants to turn back the clock. But, alas, it's too late now. Too late now.
End of Day 4
~To Love, Honour And OBEY~

Chapter 5: DAY 45
Day 4.5
*Alternate Ending*
She wakes up one day and hears the ancient calling. She gives in to her cave woman instinct and decides to take the path generations after generations of obedient and uncomplaining women took without questioning. It's her job to cook his meals. It's her duty to clean his house. It's her honor to wash, to iron, to mend and to fold his clothes. It's her life's meaning to take care of all his needs and pop out a baby every year. So she bows to his wishes. She quits her job. She forgets her dreams. She surrenders her freedom, lets go of her independence, and hands herself to him.

She thinks of her forsaken dreams. She thinks of the untaken path. She thinks of the life she didn't choose. She wants to regret her foolishness. She wants to turn back the clock. But, alas, it's too late now. Too late now...
Her whole body starts trembling as a sudden pang of pure boiling rage materializes out of nowhere and engulfs her heart. It shouldn't be like this. It's can't end like this. It's not supposed to end this way. They are meant to be together. They are meant for each other. They are the dream couple. They are a match made in Heaven. They are supposed to live happily ever after like in fairy tales and in cheap paperback romances. He molested her in his father's dark dirty smelly garage when she was but 6. He took her virginity and walked away with a smirk instead of "Thank you" or a backward glance when 10 years later. They trust, respect and love each other. They were bound in front of God. Nothing can ever taint this sacred union. Whoever tries to tear them apart shall face the wrath of God...
That night he comes home late and once again smells of another woman. He gulfs down his usual bedtime snack and goes upstairs to bed. They do not speak a word to each other. And in the dead of the night, the rat poison she added in the hot steaming wild mushrooms and tomato lasagna—his all-time favorite—finally works. She sits on her side of their bed calmly watching him roll around in pain, moan, twitch, froth and convulse uncontrollably for several long hours. She then smiles brightly when he finally dies in great pain at dawn.
He might not love her any more. But at least he died in front of her eyes, as her lawful husband.

Chapter 6: DAY 5
~A Standard Life~
A Collection of Cupcake Stories
Day 5
He grows balder. She gets fatter. His breath smells like garlic. She snores more and more like a train. He stops paying attention to what she says. She never cleans under their bed. They no longer kiss goodbye in the morning. They always eat lukewarm takeout as dinner. He drinks his beer. She chews her pizza. They watch the Rangers' game in silence. Rex and Bob are both long dead. So are their grandmas and parents. He doesn't get the promotion and the pay raise. She doesn't really care. All she wants is being a mother. But he has nonobstructive azoospermia. And none of the treatments worked. They both don't want to adopt. They both don't want to change. So they spend the rest of their life together inside the lovely 2-story cozy house, in silence and boredom, as husband and wife, till the day Death comes and forces them apart.
And Death rolls His eyes as the one who stays alive and the one who gets to die do a happy dance and yell "Yay!" at exactly the same time...
End of Day 5
~Till Death Do We Apart, YAY!~

Chapter 7: DAY 6
~A Standard Life~
A Collection of Cupcake Stories
Day 6
It's the most unexpected Burg wedding of the century. People spill coffee, tea, Red Bull and Mountain Dew everywhere and choke on pancakes, cupcakes and oatmeal porridge upon hearing the surprising news. The man who owns the most hairy ass in Trenton and the woman who allows him to hook a finger in her collar to peek at her breasts by busy roadsides during rush hours in broad daylight are going to tie the knot? Today? WTH? WTF? And why the rush? OMG! She's not pregnant, is she?
It seems that God is pretty shocked, or rather annoyed, by this marriage. So He decides to add some fun and excitement to it. The weather is plain horrible. The sun hides himself behind heavy black clouds and wisely refuses to come out. The chilly howling wind and icy roaring rain simply won't stop. People start crossing themselves when sleet and hail fall from the scaringly foreboding dark sky. The flower arrangement is aiming at expensive and elegant but ends up cheap and tacky. The organist, cellist and violinist are caught up in car accidents and can't make it to the church in time. The bemused and frightened guests desperately pray the hairy groom's crazy grandmother will not try to put the Eye on them, while the bride's drunken mother starts singing loudly and out of tune Madonna's Like a Virgin and Papa Don't Preach. The family and friends of both parties wince and cringe inside as the tall dark and very, very, very hairy groom walks with a swagger to the altar. How come he looks more and more like an ape? They wonder. Minutes later, the smiling bride shows up in a creamy-white satin wedding dress, and the quests dutifully wow as if they have never seen a more stunning bride.
Just as the bride puts the platinum wedding ring on the man who molested too many innocent little girls in his father's dirty smelly garage when he was only 8, there comes a crack of thunder right above the church barely 0.5 second after a flash of lightning penetrates the stained glass windows and hits the hairy groom's ring. A blue ray of electricity runs through both the bride's and groom's bodies. People then gape and stare in stunned silence as both of them crumble to the floor, twitching, frothing and convulsing uncontrollably for a few second and finally become very still, and very dead.
Too bad they have to get struck by lightning and thus become a pair of burned black corpses on their own wedding day. And what sucks even more is that they have NOT been announced as husband and wife. And no, she's not pregnant. He has nonobstructive azoospermia, and, alas, it's incurable...
End of Day 6
~With This Ring I Thee Wed~

Chapter 8: DAY 7
~A Standard Life~
A Collection of Cupcake Stories
Day 7
She takes her wedding ring off her finger and gently places it on her palm. A gust of sweet night breeze dances through the half opened window of the 2nd floor bedroom and ruffles her wild brown curls. She fixes her ocean blue eyes on the ever so beautiful and expensive ring. A quiet smile blossoms like a red, red rose as she admires the twinkling diamond. It's from Harry Winston. He took a day off and made a special trip to New York just for it. She thinks of the nervous look on his movie star handsome face when he dropped onto his knee and proposed in front of everyone inside Pino's. She thinks of the love and happiness in his melted-chocolate eyes when she said yes. She thinks of their wedding. She thinks of their history. She thinks of their life together. She hears the front door open and her smile deepens the moment his familiar voice calls out, "Cupcake, I'm home."
Her smile doesn't falter when she pulls the trigger and empties the clip into his face and head when he shows up at the door and kills him on the spot. STD. She gave him her love. She gave him her trust. She gave him her hand in marriage. And he gave her STD. WTH? WTF? He so totally deserves it. Period.
End of Day 7
~For Better And For Worse~

Chapter 9: DAY 75
Day 7.5
*Alternate Ending*
He made a mistake. A foolish and drunk mistake. A mistake every married man in the world has or will one day make. It was just a moment of weakness. It was but a moment of bad judgment. It means nothing, really, he swears. It was an one-night stand and one-time affair. He loves her still and as always. He casts another nervous glance at the box of expensive French chocolates and the dozen of beautiful yellow roses in his hands. Both her favorites. She is his one and only Cupcake. She is the softness and sweetness of his day. She is the meaning and brightness of his night. She is his power, She is his strength. She is his destiny. She is his fate. She is the woman he loves. And she will someday become the mother of his beautiful children, all 6 of them, 3 boys and 3 girls, all with her blue eyes and curly hair...
He puts on his most charming and sincere smile and heads upstairs. Nothing a night of hot steaming wild animal sex can't fix. However, her smile doesn't falter when she pulls the trigger and empties the magazine into his heart and his Bob and boys when he shows up at the door and kills him on the spot. STD. She gave him her love. She gave him her trust. She gave him her hand in marriage. And he gave her STD. WTH? WTF? He so totally deserves it. Period.

~For Better And For Worse~

Chapter 10: DAY 8
~A Standard Life~
A Collection of Cupcake Stories
Day 8
She holds her aching and pounding head in both shaking hands. Silently and desperately she looks upward pleadingly and says another prayer. Her poor mother hasn't woken up from her dead faint yet. 107 friends, 58 neighbors and countless relatives have already called. Right now even death looks more promising and appealing than public humiliation like this. Hot burning tears burst out of her eyes as she grabs her 5th bottle of Wild Turkey and gulps down the amber liquid. Finally, finally she loses it, and with a shrill heartbreaking wail rips open the peace and quiet of the tender summer night.
"Why Me?"
Now she realizes she's doomed. There will be no escape from her cursed fate. She will have to endure people's snickers and snorts and meaningful smiles for the rest of her damaged life. What has she done to deserve this? What has she done wrong? She cries like a lost child and asks herself. She just wants to have a life like everyone else. A typical Burg life. A standard and traditional life...
A nice and cozy 2-story house. A non-stop drooling dog. A copy of Cookbook For Dummies. A sexy little pink lace apron. A husband who molested her and millions and millions of little girls in his father's dark garage. A husband who took her virginity and walked away with an ugly smirk instead of "Thank you" or a backward glance. A husband who is as hairy as a gorilla but bald on the very top of his head. A husband who's currently developing a very promising beer-and-pizza belly. A husband who snores in his sleep. A husband who cheats on her. A husband who gives her STD. And now look at what she's got...
Yes, Joe always loved to give her surprise. Yes, Joe was planning something very special because his birthday was near. But tonight when she came home to find him in her hottest and sexiest blood red bra, thong, transparent nighty and 4 inches high heels, she just lost it and shot Joe in the head with his gun and killed him on the spot when he purred, "Please, Cupcake, call me Josephine."

Chapter 11: DAY 9
~A Standard Life~

Day 9
"I'm so...so sorry, please...please forgive me, Cupcake, please..."
She places a hand over her twitching eyes. His retching sobs are killing her. They are giving her a massive headache and driving her mad. She finally gets out of their bed and heads downstairs for a beer, a Coke, a leftover piece of pizza, a pack of half-eaten Tastykakes, anything, whatever that can keep her mind off her Hellish joke of a marriage.
"Why Me?" She turns on the TV and flips through the channels and asks herself.
Now she realizes she's doomed. There's no escape from this hateful, cursed fate. She will have to endure people's snickers and snorts and meaningful smiles for the rest of her damaged Goddamn life. What has she done to deserve this? What has she done wrong? She just wants to have a life like everyone else. A typical Burg life. A standard and traditional life...
A nice and cozy 2-story house. A copy of Cookbook For Dummies. A sexy cute little hot pink lace apron. A more-hairy-than-a-gorilla-but-bald-on-the-very-top-of-his-too-big-head husband who molested her and zillions and zillions of little girls in his father's dirty dark garage. A shameless husband who has bad breath and took hers and a lot of young girls' virginity and walked away with an ugly smirk instead of a "Thank you, Mam" or a backward glance. A husband who's developing a very promising beer-and-pizza belly. A husband who snores like a mutant pig and grinds his teeth in his sleep. A husband who cheats on her all the time. A husband who gives her all kinds of STDs. But now look at what she's got...
Oh, the disgrace! The shame! Right now even death looks much, much more promising and appealing than public humiliation like this! She wipes away her hot burning angry tears and calmly makes her decision. There's only one way to redemption. And he gives her no choice. She takes a deep, long breath, squares her shoulders, grabs his police-issued gun, goes back upstairs and shoots him dead.
"You had it coming, Joseph Morelli." With emotionless voice she says to his bloody dead body.
This lying rat bastard, this jerk, this piece of worthless shit, bought her the FAKE Harry Winston diamond wedding ring off a street vendor in the Bronx on the way to a Yankees game. And he had the nerve to tell everyone he's a die-hard Mets fan! He so totally deserves it! PERIOD!

Day 10
"I'm so...so sorry, please...please forgive me, Cupcake, I just...I just can't keep on doing this...all these lies and pretending...I just can't..."
Stephanie Morelli places a hand over her twitching eyes. Joe's retching sobs are killing her. They are giving her a massive headache and driving her mad. She finally gets out of their bed and heads downstairs for a beer, a Coke, a leftover piece of pizza, a pack of half-eaten Tastykakes, anything, whatever that can keep her mind off her Hellish joke of a marriage.
Why me?
She turns on the TV, flips through the channels and asks herself. She knows she's doomed. This city LOVES rumours and all kinds of dirty little secrets. There will be no escape from this. She knows exactly what people will think. She knows exactly what people will say. She knows her father will have to unplug the phone. She knows her mother is going to faint. She knows she will have to endure gleeful snickers and snorts and meaningful smiles for the rest of her life. And she doesn't even know what she has done to deserve this. She just wanted to have a life like everyone else. She just wanted to grow up, settle down, get married, have a few kids, and then wait for Death to come. She just wanted to have a typical Burg life, a standard and traditional life all sensible and obedient women have. But now look at what she's got.
Oh, the disgrace! The shame! Right now even death looks much, much more promising and appealing than humiliation like this! She wipes away her hot burning angry tears and calmly makes her decision. There's only one way to redemption. And Joe gives her no choice. It's all his fault. She has every right to do this. She squares her shoulders, takes a deep breath to calm herself, grabs Joe's police-issued gun from the drawer, goes back upstairs, and shoots her liar of a husband dead.
"You had it coming, Joe Morelli." With emotionless voice Stephanie hissed to his bloody dead body. "You are a lying rat bastard. You are a shameless jerk. You are a piece of worthless shit. You bought me a FAKE Harry Winston diamond ring off a street vendor in the Bronx on the way to a Yankees game. You told everyone You were a die-hard Mets fan. You gave me STDs. And now you had the nerve to tell me you had been in love with Vinnie ever since the two of you first met and you wanted a divorce so that you could move in with him? How dare you? You so totally deserve it!"

~To LOVE And To Cherish~

Chapter 13: DAY 11
~A Standard Life~
A Collection of Cupcake Stories
Day 11
She knows he has been cheating on her. She has known that for years. But truth be told, she doesn't mind that much now. It's really no big deal. All Morelli men are like this. And they have needs. She's only too grateful that Joe has never beaten her too badly. All her teeth are still intact, her nose hasn't been broken yet, her black eyes always disappear fast, and she knows just how to hide her bruises. Besides, she's the one to blame. It was all her fault. It always was, really. She shouldn't have upset him whenever he came home drunk in the middle of the night. She should have kept her mouth shut when he returned from a long day of tedious work or woke up with a hangover. She should have cooked the spaghetti al dente. She should have used fresh tomatoes and fresh basil. She should have put in extra garlic. She should have added a little more salt. She should have mopped the floor more frequently. She have ironed and fold his boxer shorts more perfectly. She should have been able to satisfy all his fantasies and desires. She have learned more new tricks in bed. And she should have been able to give him babies, a lot of babies...
Yes, she should be ashamed of herself. She should tear her hair out in sorrow and pain. He put that wedding ring onto her finger. He gave her a roof over her head. He's the one who took her virginity. He's the one who taught her how to play "choo choo". And she fails to bear him children! Oh, the disgrace! Oh, the shame! She can never be able to teach her daughters to follow boys into their fathers' garages. She can never be able to encourage her sons to sweet talk young girls out of their panties and then reveal all the delicious details on public bathroom walls.
Tears roll down Stephanie "Cupcake" Morelli's badly swollen bruised cheeks. Yes, Joe is right. Joe is always right. Always. Now death is her only salvation. She can't keep on disappointing everybody. She grabs hold of the police-issued gun Joe placed in her shaking hands before he left for the bar, points it at her head, and pulls the trigger and kills herself. She may never be a perfect wife, but at least she dies as a most obedient wife...and maybe when Joe comes home to find her cold dead body, he will smile his charming smile and tell her, "Proud of you, Cupcake."

Chapter 14: DAY 12

Day 12
*Sequel to Day 11*
Stephanie's eyes shoot open. She can't stay here. She needs to go home to her Joseph. She needs to return to her lawfully wedded husband. She needs to be with her movie star handsome husband. She wants to drink in the laughter in those melted chocolate bedroom eyes. She wants to taste the smile on his supple sexy lips. She wants to devour his permanent 5 o'clock shadow. She wants to swallow him whole. It doesn't take long for her to break away from her confinement. She fights her way through the barriers. She staggers onward, with only one goal in mind. She has to go home as soon as possible. She must return to her husband. She is nothing but loyal and obedient. She stumbles and falters but keeps moving forward. She is a woman of determination. She is a woman with a mission. She has a hunger to tame. She has a thirst to quench. The dogs howl. The owls screech. The cats hiss. The rats scatter. But she just keeps on moving forward. She has only one goal. She wants, she needs, she craves for her husband. And home is not far ahead...
Joseph A. Morelli falls peacefully asleep. He smiles happily in his dream. Finally, finally, after 10 long years of childless marriage, he managed to get rid of the barren Stephanie. Now he can put a diamond on his young new love's hand, and she will start popping out babies, a bunch of little Morellis. He's going to be a daddy! He sighs a contented sigh, and waves at his running laughing kids and their beautiful attractive mommy...
Suddenly a sharp pain screams and pierces through Joe Morelli's dream. He jerks awake to the unbearable pain in his left hand and an ugly chewing sound. He almost faints at the smell of his own blood and something rotten. He blinks away his tears and sees the dark shape by the side of his bed. Desperately he tries to pull his hand free from the creature's clutches but to no avail. The clouds drift away from the moon and allows the pale silver moonlight to shine through his bedroom windows. Joe Morelli stares in terror at his greyish-green decomposing zombie of a dead wife who's now happily chewing his fingerless left hand. He wants to scream but no sound comes out. He wants to fight Stephanie off but finds no strength. He's simply way too scared. And thus he sits there dazedly while slowly and thoroughly the zombie who has only half a head left eats him alive...
"Cupcaaaaaake..." Stephanie "Cupcake" Morelli moans in pleasure as she sucks her husband's bone marrow and brain, "yuuuuuuuuuummy."

Day 13
*Sequel to Day 12*
There must have been love. There must have been trust. There must have been understanding. There must have been acceptance. Or maybe it has always been a lie. Nothing more. Nothing less. Nothing, but a lie. A big fat lie. Lust pretended to be love. Dishonesty pretended to be trust. Everything else is wistful delusion. But it doesn't matter now. Not anymore. It's over. All over. Silence descends upon the lifeless house. Pale moonlight shines through the window panes. Everything is a mess. What is left is nothing but trash. And blood is everywhere. A badly chewed platinum men's wedding ring lies on the cold hard floor. A second-hand Rolex is half-hidden under a pile of sucked bones and puked-up hairballs. A bloody sock here. A torn boxer brief there. And the zombie once known as Bombshell Bounty Hunter is already gone...
She's out for a hunt. Her cheating abusive husband's flesh, brain, bone marrow and blood are, sadly, not enough. She now has a greater hunger to tame. She now has a a more urgent thirst to quench.
"Cupcake..." Stephanie Morelli moans.
"Cupcake..." Stephanie Morelli groans.
She sniffs sweet night air and lurches forward. A dog yelps and runs away. A rat squeaks in terror and runs down the drain. And she moves forward, without a backward glance.
"Cupcake..." Stephanie Morelli drools.
"Cupcake..." Stephanie Morelli stumbles and falters, but she keeps moving forward. "Yuuuuuuuum..."

Chapter 16: DAY 14
~A Standard Life~
A Collection of Cupcake Stories
Day 14
*Sequel to Day 13*
The city is quiet. Too quiet. Silence is everywhere, and deafening. The smell of pain and fear is heavy in the still air. There is no sign of life behind all those torn doors and broken windows. Those who clapped their hands and heartily cheered when Joe Morelli and Stephanie Plum were officially announced as husband and wife are now all dead—eaten alive by the the invincible grayish green decomposing monster who came out of the darkness in lightning speed and went straight for their custard-like brains. They didn't even have the time or the strength to scream like the victims in zombie movies. They were simply too stunned and too scared by the horrible sight. And none of them thought of fighting back or doing anything to give their attacker a harder time. So one by one, just like racks after racks of sweet soft tasty cute cupcakes, they got eaten alive and died.
The zombie once known as Stephanie Plum or Morelli lurches forward aimlessly. She has accomplished what she came back to do. She's no longer hungry or thirsty, and now she has nowhere to go and no one to turn to. She doesn't know what to do. She stops at a crossroad and looks ahead at the all too familiar 7-story building. She wants to blink but she now has no eyelids(she doesn't remember if it was a rat or several cockroaches that ate them when she was still buried 6 feet deep). She feels like crying but she now has no tears. Her remaining brain cells scream a name. A familiar name. A name that warms her zombie heart. A name that makes her wish life can just stop and restart. She made a foolish mistake years ago, chose the wrong path, got herself killed and became a zombie. And now there's no return...
She lets out a raspy crying-like moan, turns around, flees and disappears. And nobody ever hears of her, Stephanie "Cupcake" Morelli, the man-eating zombie.

Day 15
She looks at herself in the mirror and suddenly feels sick. She's a beautiful bride. She looks gorgeous in this creamy white satin dress. But her face is pale and her eyes as wild as a terrified deer's. She is going to get married for a second time in less than 12 minutes, and now she's nervous and nauseous. She chose the road a lot of women chose without blinking or thinking. She made her decision according to what a lot of people call "common sense" and "logic". She thinks of her parents' smile and tears. She thinks of her childhood dreams and wishes. She thinks of love, friendship and acceptance. She thinks of the man she's going to marry. She thinks of the history between them. She thinks of what they want and what they need. And she turns around and starts running like Paradise is on fire. She can hear wind laughing in her ears. She can feel sunlight raining on her skin. And she keeps running. Straight forward. Without a backward glance.
You can really haul ass in those heels. The memory will give me sleepless nights for a long time.
She recalls the hint of a smile in his voice. She recalls the nights they spent together. She recalls the heat radiating off his body. She recalls the beating of her heart and the whisper of her soul. She knows she made a terrible mistake. She knows she picked the wrong path. She knows she was being stupid. She knows she was being weak and lazy. She knows she should've listened to her bleeding heart. She knows she should've learned to think with her rusty brain. She knows she should've been smart, should've been tough, should've been brave and resilient, should've known nothing is worse than settling for anything less than the best. She keeps on running straight ahead without a backward glance.

And she hopes it's not too late.

Day 16
He smiles his biggest brightest smile and waits for the time to arrive. He's going to get married, for the very first time in his life, to the woman he thinks and believes he truly loves. He already has a dog. He already has a house. What he has to do now is get a wife and father his own child. His dream will then be realized and he'll be like everyone else. He's not a pervert. He's no child molester. He was just a naughty teenager. He was just a curious innocent boy. He's average and ordinary. He's perfectly normal. He's not like his father, uncles, brother, and cousins. He's entitled to happiness. He has beaten the Morelli Curse.
He looks into the mirror and grins at himself. The breeze is gentle. The sky is blue. He looks movie star charming and handsome in his brand new tuxedo. He has finally got the girl. He waits for the knock to come. He feels like dancing all the way to the altar. He imagines the softness and warmth of her hand. He pictures the moment he slipping the rose gold diamond ring onto her ring finger. He will get the pay raise and promotion. Every night at 6 o'clock sharp she will serve him dinner. Al dente pasta. Chopped tomatoes. Extra garlic and fresh basils. They will live happily ever after. He looks at his watch and smiles and waits. 12 minutes to go. And he will be the happiest man on the surface of the soil...
He hears a door bang against a wall. He hears high heels running down the hall. He hears someone calling "Stephanie!" in pure panic. He hears the woman he can't wait to marry tearing out of the chapel. His smile freezes. His blood boils. He turns away from the mirror and runs after her. He's here to be married in front of witnesses. He would rather die than be humiliated. He's not going home empty-handed. He runs and runs and runs. He is much faster than she is. He comes closer and closer and closer. He can almost smells her rose-scented perfume. He can almost grasp hold of her loosened wild curls. 10 seconds, give him 10 seconds and she will be his. Anger blurs his eyes. Indignation blocks his vision.
He never sees the 18-wheeler coming.
She doesn't stop when tires screech and people start screaming. She just keeps on running straight ahead without a backward glance. And hopes it's not too late.

Day 17
Her feet hurt. Her lungs ache. And she keeps on running. She doesn't know when she has started crying. Her hair is a mess. Her makeup is ruined. And now her nose is running too. But she doesn't feel or notice a thing. She can only hear the sound of her heart throbbing and her frantic silent praying. Please. Please don't leave me. Please. I'm so sorry. Please. I was being stupid. Please. I was not thinking. Please. I made a mistake. Please. Please give me another chance. Please. Please don't say you no longer love me in your own way. Please. Please don't tell me it's too late. Please. Please don't let go and move on without me. Please...Please...
The heel of her wedding shoe suddenly snaps. She loses her balance and sprains her ankle. She falls heavily to the ground and gasps. She tries to stand back up and can't. She's 6 blocks away from the man she now knows she truly loves. She tries and fails again. Panic and despair sink in. Reality comes back and slaps her hard in the face. Her ankle is already swollen. She's tired, exhausted and in great pain. She doesn't have a phone. She has no one to call. She needs to see him. She needs to tell him. She wants, for once, to be true and honest to him and to herself. She can't stay here. But she's stuck here. And now all she can do is cry her heart out...
Stop whining. Woman up and give it another try. She blinks back her tears and tells herself. We can't afford to lose time now.
She spends a minute to collect herself. She takes off her shoes and braces herself. She struggles and struggles and finally gets back on her feet. She inhales a deep breath and very slowly drags herself forward. Each step hurts like Hell. But she keeps limping straight ahead without a backward glance. She knows people are staring. But she doesn't care. He's only 6 blocks away. And she wants him, needs him, loves him too much to give up now.
5 blocks.
4 blocks.
3 blocks.
2 blocks.
1 block left.
And now she's here.

Day 18
The sun disappears behind the clouds. The sky darkens. and the wind grows cold. She stands there shaking from exhaustion and sudden helplessness. She looks like a bride from Hell. And she no longer has his keys. She gave them back to him. Via Fedex. Months ago. She looks at the heavy steel gate to the underground garage and feels timid. What is she going to tell him? Does she deserve a second chance? Will he want to know why she is here? What if he doesn't want her? What if he's not even here? Doubt and fear clench at her heart and whisper in her ears. She stands there shaking. She's cold, tired, thirsty, uncertain, and lonely. There's no turning back now. Softly and numbly she finally tells herself. What is done can't be undone. She will have to face whatever waits ahead for her no matter what.
The gate slides open on its own accord. She hesitates a bit and slowly limps in. The gate closes behind her. Everything is quiet. There's no one in sight. It's the first time she literally walks in here. She thinks of all her blown up cars. She thinks of all the cars he lent her. She thinks of his badass truck. She thinks of his BMWs and Mercedes. She thinks of his Boxster. She thinks of his Cayenne. She thinks of his 911 Turbo. She thinks of him. She hears the elevator ding. She looks up and sees him. She stops where she is. She has no idea what to say to him. Her heart is full of anxiety and worry. Her brain is empty. He looks just the same. As perfect as in her memory. She can't decipher the look in his eyes. She smells a subtle hint of Bvlgari. It reminds her of the time they spent together in the shower. She's afraid of what he's going to tell her. The silence seems to last forever. Then he comes toward her. Casts a look at her dirty bare feet. Picks her up bridal style. And carries her all the way into his 7th floor apartment.
No word is needed.

Day 19
Her stomach growls. The gunshot wound on her butt hurts. She has just killed a man. For the very first time in her life. In self defense. And she still isn't sure how she feels. Is she supposed to feel guilty? Is she supposed to feel uneasy? Is she supposed to feel relieved? Is she supposed to break down? Is she suppose to cry? She looks down at her hands. No. They are not shaking. She looks up and focuses her eyes on the spot where the man who'd tried to kill her got shot and died. No. She doesn't feel nauseous or sick. She closes her eyes and thinks hard for a while, and decides that she doesn't regret what she did. It wasn't her fault. She prefers life to death. And she was just trying to save herself.
Her stomach growls again and she frowns. Where the Hell is Pino's delivery guy? She's starving. She wants her pizza. Now. She's about to pick up her phone and make a complaint call when a knock comes from the front door. She fishes a couple bills out of her shoulder bag and looks out of the peephole. Hot spicy cheesy pizza. And something else. She leaves the safety chain on and unlocks the door and looks straight into the grinning face of the all too familiar hairy man. She knows why he's here. She's glad he's here. Without a word she smiles and crooks a finger at him. Without hesitation he leans closer toward her and his grin deepens. And in lightning speed she raises the gun in her hand and shoots the rat bastard right in his face.
She's Stephanie Plum, a female rookie bounty hunter in her late 20s. She, like most Jersey girls, knows how to hold grudges, and she'll ALWAYS remember the arrogant cocky smile on Joe Morelli's face when he trashed her apartment and cuffed her naked to her shower curtain rod. Till the day she dies.

Day 20
She wakes up completely entangled with Ranger. She raises herself on her arms and looks down into his dark brown eyes. His hands feel warm and gentle on her waist. He smells so good. And she simply loves everything, EVERYTHING, about him. It's now or never. She whispers to herself, and makes a brave decision. She kisses his neck and his bare shoulder. Her fingers skim across his muscled torso. She kisses his perfect lips. Their tongues touch. Then her mouth moves lower and lower… and lower...
She freezes in mid kiss.
She didn't hear the lock tumble. But she knows someone's at her door. Don't ask her how. She just knows it. She moves off Ranger, slips out of bed, puts on his black T-Shirt, and starts for the door. The front door to her apartment opens, and the chain catches with a snap. There's a moment's silence, and then Morelli's voice sounding impatient.
"Cupcake?"
She looks at Joe Morelli over the chain. His melted chocolate eyes travel to her bare thighs and stay there. She knows why he's here. She's glad he's here. Without a word she smiles and crooks a finger at him. Without hesitation he leans closer toward her and his lusty grin deepens. And in lightning speed she raises the gun in her hand and shoots the rat bastard right in his face. She slams the door close, locks the locks, and returns to Ranger.
She's not really a violent person. But she does has limitation. And she doesn't like to be disturbed when she's in the middle of, well, you know.

~A Standard Life~

Day 21
She looks into the mirror and stares at her bruised cheek and swollen lips. Her whole body aches. And her left eye is blackened, too. She's only 22 years old. But she looks battered and beaten and tired and old. She wishes she can cry. She has no strength for tears. She thinks of all the shattered plates and cups and overthrown furniture. She's simply glad he didn't break her bone or crack her rib. She told the doctor and the nurse she tripped and fell, as usual. She knows they didn't believe it. She also knows they won't do anything about it. This is the Burg, after all. Everyone knows each other. And no one wants to mind other people's business. Besides, it was her fault, as always. She failed to please her husband. He was entitled to teach her a lesson. That's one of the many unspoken rules of the family. His family.
She thought she could tame him. She thought she could change him. She thought her love and patience would be enough. But she was wrong. He's still a drunkard. He's still a chain smoker. He's still rude to her friends and parents. And he didn't stop hitting her when she screamed that she was pregnant. He's not an animal. He's not a bad person. He was just under too much stress and pressure. He was just too drunk to listen. She still loves him. But now she has no choice but to leave him. She can't risk the life of her baby. The little life inside her deserves a chance to real happiness.
Angie wipes away her tears and calls the women's shelter. She's still going to name the baby Anthony if it is a boy. She prays her first child will not grow up and become a man like his father. 11 months later. Anthony Morelli, Angie's movie star handsome husband, gets himself killed in a bar brawl. Angie and her son Anthony never return to Trenton.
And Joe Morelli is never born.

Chapter 1: Twisting

Twisting
She is numb. She is scared. She is terrified. She has no one to run to. She has no place to go hide. She doesn't know what to do. She doesn't know whom to tell. She doesn't know how to feel. She only knows she can't and doesn't want to live like this. She needs to find him. She needs to see him. She needs to tell him. But she dares not. She is so lonely. Everyone is so demanding. Everything is so wrong and so complicated. And life is so hard, so tough, so miserable and so different without him. She wishes she was brave enough. She wishes she was smart enough. She wishes he will understand. She wishes he will be forgiving. She wishes she was not that foolish. She hopes it won't be too late. She wishes and hopes and prays that he loves her still. She needs his help. She needs his strength. She needs his support. And she now knows and understands and realizes that she needs him. She needs his smile. She needs his frown. She needs his warmth. She needs his love.

She picks up her phone with her trembling hand and calls him. She's now 8 weeks pregnant. She doesn't know and can't be sure who the father is. She can only pray it is his.

Chapter 2: Twirling

Twirling

She musters all her courage and then says into her phone in a tiny broken voice, "I..I'm pregnant."

His breathing remains even instead of quickening, and his silence almost kills her. Despair and shame engulf her the moment he softly asks, "And?"

"And I...I don't..." She can't finish the sentence. She slept with the two men in her life within 24 hours. And now she's pregnant and has no idea who her child's father is. Tears start rolling down her face like two silent icy rivers. She wasn't brought up and raised to end up like this. She always calls Joyce Barnhardt a skank. Now look at her. She almost laughs out loud. A slap in her face. The Irony of Life. Poetic justice. She wonders if her mother will faint. She wonders if her father will drop his fork and knife on the plate. She wonders if she will look good in a maternity dress. She wonders if he has already regretted the day they met.

And she starts crying out loud upon hearing his gentle voice, "Be there in 10."

Chapter 3: Crumbling

Crumbling
The man with the permanent 5 o'clock shadow lets himself into the shabby 2nd floor apartment and stands frozen in the shadow of the doorway feeling like dying. All of a sudden he doesn't know any more why he loves and wants and waits for her all these year. He then abruptly realizes she's not that different from the naïve 6-year-old who followed him into his father's dark isolated garage that hot summer day, or the willing 16-year-old who did exactly as she was told another humid summer evening 10 years later. He wonders when she is going to tell him. He wonders if she will ever tell him. He wonders if she really or has ever loved him. He wonders if the child is his. And he starts hating himself. He starts hating her, and the other man in her life. He starts regretting all the choices he made for his future life. He regrets all the dreams and hopes he has about his future happiness.
He wishes he can just walk away. He wishes he can leave as quietly and silently as he came. He knows the dark cool man is coming over here. And he has no intention to stay and watch them kiss and embrace. But he has never felt so angry, so betrayed. He listens in to her anguish. He listens in to her shame. He wants so much to smash all her worry, pain and regret. He always wants a family. He always wants to be a daddy. And now what he gets is this. He wants to cry. He wants to laugh. He wants to shake her like a ragged doll and asks "Why me?". But he just turns around and walks out of the building unnoticed without a backward glance.
He doesn't have the courage to stay and finds out if the child is his.

Chapter 4: Drifting

Drifting.
"Do you want to keep it?"

He sits in the one good chair in her small living room and asks calmly while she sits on her crappy couch fidgeting and looking anywhere but at him. She doesn't know what to say, because she still doesn't have an answer to this question. She hasn't been able to think straight for the last couple days. And she really misses him. It's been 31 days. She hasn't seen him ever since the night he walked out of he door without a backward glance. She didn't even run into him at the police station or the bonds office, and she didn't see his sleek black Porsche anywhere on the streets. And Trenton, as a matter of fact, is not such a big city. She blinks and squirms a little bit. She knows he's waiting. But her brain is empty. All she can think about right now is how much she wants to kiss him, hold him, and feel his warmth and steady heartbeat next to her cold shivering body. She isn't sure if she ever wants or can be a mother. It's too much a promise and responsibility for someone who is not even a good hamster owner. But the thought of having his baby growing inside her body gives her thrills. Will the child be a boy or a girl? Will the child looks like her or him? Will the child have his eyes? Will the child have his smile? Will the child have his smooth perfect skin? Will their child make his love come back to her with a diamond ring?

But what if it's Morelli's?

She is rendered breathless by sudden panic. She doesn't want to be like the Morelli women. She doesn't want to become her own mother. Dinner on table at 6 sharp every night. Thorough house cleaning every 2 weeks. 2 or 3 or 4 or even 5 kids to keep her busy for the rest of her life. For the rest of her life...The world around her blackens as she faints. He catches her effortlessly before she falls onto the floor.

And he still has no idea why he always has to be her hero.

Chapter 5: Floating

Floating
She has dark circles under her puffy eyes and looks unhealthily pale and thin. Her kitchen cabinets are bare. Her refrigerator is next to empty except for the truly empty bottle of peanut butter and the sole slice of stale toast. Even her little rodent of a pet looks desperate and starved. He sighs as he gives the toast to Rex and watches the hungry hamster devour it like a crazy cannibal beast. He wishes he knows what to do with her. He knows she needs his help. He knows she needs his support. He knows she has no one to turn to and no place to go. But he has no idea if his love for her will be enough for them both. It wasn't enough for her in the past. It isn't enough for him at the present. So how can it be enough in their future?

He wishes he knows what she has been thinking. Or does she ever really think? He thinks about her strange, almost sick obsession and definitely abnormal and twisted relationship with Morelli and can no longer hold back a frown. There's a way to make sure who her child's father is, but the test is risky for the 8-week fetus. And he honestly has not a clue what he's going to do if the child proves to be his. What if she's somehow really in love with Morelli? What if she doesn't want to keep the baby? What if she wants to raise his child with Morelli? Does he himself really want a baby? And what if the child is not his?

He places a hand over his suddenly tired eyes and wishes his life can stop being so complicated. But still he doesn't regret the day he first met her. Go figure. Ranger lets out another sigh, and goes back into the small bedroom to check on Stephanie Plum.

Chapter 6: Dancing

Dancing
It's about time for dinner when she finally wakes up from her faint, and they both agree she can't and shouldn't live alone under the current circumstance. So he calls and asks his housekeeper to prepare dinner for two, helps pack her bags, grabs her pet, and drives back to the RangeMan building while the two of them pretend Joe Morelli doesn't exist. He puts several pieces of fresh fruit into the the glass aquarium for the poor hamster as she eats her first hot meal in 3 days like a refugee. He then leaves her to unpack and settle in, and goes down to his 5th floor office. He has some paperwork to catch up on, and he also needs time to think. He knows he still loves her. But the problem is he can't help wondering why he loves her. Of all the women in the world, he has to fall in love with someone who can't break away from unhealthy old habits and keeps on crawling back to the same man over and over again? What the Hell? Is he really both mentally and emotionally sick? Or is it his Karma? He steps out of the elevator and looks straight into the carefully blank but still sympathetic eyes of his loyal friend and second-in-command who is clever enough to choose his cats over his girlfriend.

He raises his brow slightly as the nervous giant of a man bravely gives him a brotherly pat on his shoulder. A rare full-on smile spreads across his face on its own accord. Maybe it's time to give Tank a raise.

Chapter 7: Engulfing

Engulfing
He gulfs down his pizza and beer, and still doesn't know what to do with her.

He always says he wants them to settle down, get married, and start their own family. But he never says or does anything when she looks away and quickly changes the subject. He always says he's now a matured and changed man and truly loves her. But he never ever objects when the other man in her fuck-up life steps up and helps her out. He never volunteers his help. But he's always there ready for wild steaming adult video sex when whatever trouble is solved. He sometimes thinks it's kind of funny that the one who's always doing all the dirty heavy work and bleeding both money and blood just to protect her is not the one who gets to fuck her. Hell, even Richard Gere didn't pay so much for Julia Roberts in that silly film. And he never ever blushes when his fellow cops tell him how lucky he is to have another man watch over and take such good care of his woman.

Of course he knows what they really mean. Of course he knows there's always been something between those two. He's not blind, deaf, stupid, or dead. He sure is not happy about this. But still he never ever confronts her about her true feelings about Ranger. And he never ever really tries his best to walk away. What if the child is his? He will have to marry her, will he not? What if the child is not his? He will have to give her up, won't he? Or will she ask him to marry her and raise Ranger's child with her? Christ! Is he only joking or does he really want to have children with her? Does he really mean it whenever he locks her with his melted chocolate bedroom eyes and tells her he loves her? Does he really mean it whenever he gives her his sexy charming smile and says he wants her to be the mother of his children? Does he really want to spend the rest of his life with a woman who always hides another man in her heart? Does he have that in him to love another man's child as his own? Can he trust her? Does he love her? Or is she just someone handy to have around whenever he's horny and hungry for some serious fun? And where the Hell did all these questions come from?

He curses out loud and in a sudden fit of anger throws the last empty beer can against the living room wall, and becomes more frustrated when his sleeping dog startles awake and yelps and runs away in panic to hide under the kitchen sink. Great. He stands up from the chewed up couch and walks upstairs to his messy bedroom. He has just started regretting knowing Stephanie Plum.

Chapter 8: Whispering

Whispering
She always loves his apartment. It's bright, serene, spacious, so tastefully decorated and extremely well-equipped. It reminds her of him. Elegant, but not loud. She used to imagine what it would be like moving in and living here with him. Like a real couple, in their personal world, with or without a diamond ring. She knows all along whom she really wants and, yes, loves, but just like a typical ever so dumb, stubborn and blind heroine in a paperback romance written by an out-of-date writer who clearly has no taste in men, she kept running away from him and choosing the wrong man instead. After he left her with neither a goodbye nor a backward glance, she sometimes feels a compelling urge to crack open her own stupid head to see if she really has a brain. She looks into the mirror at her still flat belly and sadly smiles. Well, she guess she really doesn't have the much needed brain.

She puts on her old loose pajamas and goes sit on his bed, and yawns. She feels drowsy, sleepy and happy after the delicious hearty meal and the hot long shower. She knows she needs to think things through. She knows she needs to get ready to face whatever difficulties caused by the two possibilities. She knows she needs to talk to him. But she's too tired, too exhausted. She climbs under the blanket, breathing in the lingering scent of Bvlgari on his pillows and quickly falls asleep.

And the nightmare that scared her awake in the dead of the night for the past two days does not return.

Chapter 9: Embracing

Embracing
She wakes up slowly and gradually to the faint sound of shower running, not remembering her dream. Bright sunlight shines through the bedroom window as she yawns and blinks away the lingering sleepiness. She stretches and takes another deep breath of the now stronger scent of Bvlgari. Her hand reaches out on its own accord to feel the still lukewarm sheet on the empty half of the bed. She thinks of the first time she woke up in this bed next to him, and once again feels the razor-sharp teeth of her regrets. If only she could turn back the clock and undo her mistakes. She sits up gingerly and immediately spots the bottles on the nightstand. Pregnancy nutrition supplements and Vitamins. She quickly wipes away the sudden drop of tear, feeling guilty, ashamed and grateful at the same time. She doesn't know what to say to him. A mere "Thank you" will be far from enough. And maybe it's too late for "I love you" now. She sits there in her old Mickey Mouse pajamas listening to the sad beating of her silent heart, and turns her head as the bathroom door opens and Ranger comes out.

She looks into his calm beautiful intelligent eyes, and all of a sudden the courage buried somewhere deep within her tattered, bruised soul wakes up, grabs hold of her heart, and makes her tells him quietly, "I'm sorry".

Yes, she knows she owes him an apology. She probably owes herself one, too. She thinks almost irrelevantly to herself while feeling glad and relieved that for once she's honest and smart enough not to hide her feelings. She then proceeds to tell him that she loves him, that she doesn't want to spend the rest of her life with Morelli even if the child later proves to be Morelli's, and that she also doesn't believe she has it in her to raise the child alone on her own. She stops right there and turns her eyes away. The glistening waterdrops on his perfect body are indeed very distracting. There's no need to say more. They both know what she is asking. They both know how much she is asking. She squares her shoulders and waits for his answer.
And they both know what his answer will be.

Chapter 10: Smothering

Smothering
It's the right thing to do. He looks into the mirror and tells himself. It's best for everyone. Love and religious belief have no say in this. He needs to take the necessary responsibility and make the right decision, like it or not. He's a highly praised police detective with a promising career ahead of him. He wants to be on top of the pyramid someday, and no, he can't afford to have a scandal like this. Police politics is cruel and simple in a complicated way. Having a wife, fiancée or girlfriend who's always involved with another man is a perfect roadblock to promotion, and raising a child whose bio-father will always be a huge hanging question mark—no paternity testing will be 100% accurate, as a matter of indisputable scientific fact—will only make him a laughing stock. And he knows he won't be able to love the child even if it's truly his. He will always have doubts no matter what. And not to mention now he doesn't even know if he still wants a future with Stephanie Plum.

He finishes shaving, gets dressed, locks his door firmly behind him and drives to her parking lot. He didn't stop at Pino's or Tasty Bakery to grab something for her. Her old dirty yellow Ford is still in front of the dumpster. Her small shabby apartment is silent. Her pet is nowhere to be seen. Her closet and drawers are half-empty. He knows where and whom she is with. He becomes angry right away even if he knows that's totally meaningless and not necessary. He knows he wants to end it, everything, right here right now. He knows he needs to walk away and save himself. But he's still unsure if he can let go just like that. So he sits down heavily on the crappy couch and starts waiting for someone who is already gone and won't be back. No, he doesn't cry. Tears are for women and sissies and he's a grown up matured man, Trenton's very own Italian Stallion. He just needs some time to figure out...to figure out whatever he has or never has with Stephanie Plum. He holds his aching head in his hands. And he doesn't even want to think about what he should do if Stephanie wants to raise his flesh and blood with someone else.

Maybe suing the birth control pill company will be a good start.

Chapter 11: Settling

Settling
What about Morelli? What if the child is his? What if he wants the baby? What if he wants to get married? What if he demands custody? What if he explodes and starts yelling and drags everybody into this? Does he really need to know? Does he have a right to know? Does she want to to tell him? Can she not tell him? Can't her life be less complicated?

She turns away from these unanswered questions and their frowning faces. They upset her and make her dizzy. She has made up her mind and told Ranger her decision. And now there's no turning back. She feels like a soaking wet lost puppy, shivering from hunger and cold and desperate. She has no choice but to follow the kind-hearted kid all the way home and force her way in. She knows he won't turn her down. She knows he won't say no. She knows he always does the right thing. She knows she's more than a noble priority and loving amusement to him. And now she prays he loves her still. Even if she knows crystal clear she probably doesn't deserve it. She knows she's selfish. But she just can't help it. She doesn't want to kill or give up the baby. Because she's Catholic and it may be his. And she wants a life with him. And she now knows for a fact that she doesn't want and never really loves Joe Morelli. They are at most friends with benefits. That's it. Love is never involved. Ever.

She musters all her remaining courage and dignity to look up at him, and nearly bursts into tears as he curtly nods and says in his usual steady calm voice.

"When's your next appointment with your OB?"

Chapter 12: Strengthening

Strengthening
He made his decision the moment he realized he had to bring her back to his apartment and into his life. He didn't have much of a choice, as a matter of fact, and he understood and accepted that. It's the right thing to do. It's the way of his life. He has seen, heard and been through a lot. And this fucked up mess of a relationship is really nothing compared to the death and destruction he witnessed and helped cause in the name of patriotism and justice. He's kind of used to facing and dealing with the consequences of human follies and flaws. And he honestly can't say the current situation is none of his fault. He knows he had it coming. He knows he should have walked away sooner. He should have let go of her earlier. He should have told her life is not a game. He should have helped her grow and mature. He should have made her stand on her own. But no, he had to be her hero. He had to make sure she was safe. He had to feel happy whenever he saw the smile on her face. He had to help her out all the time and thus made her more dependent and irresponsible. It was his fault. And now he has to pay for his own mistakes.

Ranger dries himself with the towel and puts on his usual attire of fitting black shirt and cargo pants. He's really a busy man. He doesn't do relationship and marriage and babies because he likes it this way. It's much easier and less complicated. He doesn't want to come home to a howling baby and a weeping lonely wife. He doesn't want to waste his time and energy on finding a balance between his job and his personal life. He tried that once and failed. But now he's going to do that again, and this time he doesn't plan to fail. With love come duties and obligations. He must, and is willing to make necessary changes.

He picks out the nutrition supplements and Vitamins that have to be taken before meal and watches Stephanie swallow them with a frown on her face. He saw the desperation, self-loathing and shame in her eyes when she told him her decision. But he likes the determined resolution and unrelenting courage that shone through her worries and fears. And yes, he loves her still.

And now they both know Morelli will no longer be a problem between them.

Chapter 13: Concentrating

Concentrating
Time floats by.

The baby is healthy and growing. They get married in a warm spring morning by a judge 18 days after she moved into his 7th floor apartment. He brings her to meet his grandmother and his parents the next day. His smiling father looks like an older version of him and doesn't say much. Both Grandma Rosa and his mother smack him on his head when they are leaving. They have dinner with her family that Friday at her parents'. Her mother bursts into tears at the sight of the Cartier diamond wedding ring around her ring finger. She's more than happy and relieved that her 30-something divorced younger daughter is finally once again married. Her new son-in-law may be a little dark and not Italian, but he sure is polite, good-mannered, nice-looking, has his own business, and Catholic. A mother really can't ask for more, can she? Her father looks up from his second helping of pot roast, gravy and mashed potatoes to cast a glance at her ring, gives them both a small nod, and goes back to his dinner right away while her grandma and sister begin making calls and spreading the news.

Friends, relatives and neighbors send their congratulations via phone calls during the weekend. Her cop friends give her big warm hugs and insist on paying for her doughnuts in her favorite bakery Monday morning. Her two sulking colleagues reluctantly accept the boxes of doughnuts and French chocolates and forgive her, and start fighting for the post of godmother. Her weasel of a cousin opens his office door and instead of bitching about the inconvenience her sudden resignation causes him, congratulates her almost sincerely.

Everyday she eats her healthy meals and swallows her pills and tablets on time, and does all the necessary exercise in the RangeMan gym with him. Every night she cuddles to his side, breathing in his scent, and falls asleep. She now knows how to blink back her tears when telling him "Don't get shot" every time he has to leave for some emergency in the middle of the night. She now knows the combination of his safe. She now knows his parents' and siblings' and in-laws' names. She now knows some of his childhood and Ranger days stories. She now knows that the Batcave is where his heart is.

And she's both glad and worried that Joe Morelli keeps his silence.

Chapter 14: Evaporating

Evaporating
Morelli keeps his silence because he doesn't know what to do or what to expect.
Surely no sane man will ever want to marry a woman who's carrying another man's child. Morelli feels both bitter and hopeful as he tries his best to convince himself, but soon detects the dreadful, cheap taste of fear and disgust in his mouth when he recalls that he always told her Ranger was crazy, not exactly normal, and a loose cannon wired differently from your average adults. And the sad and embarrassing truth is, Morelli knows perfectly clear that instead of fair and true observation, he was speaking out of envy and jealousy. He's not happy that this younger and darker outsider is much richer and more successful than he is in his own home town. He has tried all he can to nose and snoop around, but still has not a clue where all those sleek black cars come from. And it makes him angrier and more depressed.

Of course Ranger can afford to raise someone else's child. He is financially and emotionally capable to do crazy stuff like this all the time. He gives Stephanie expensive cars after expensive cars after watching her blow them up or somehow get them destroyed as if money is nothing, and he allows another man to officially become the father of his only child. Morelli thins his lips in slight but obvious contempt. He, on the other hand, has only offered to lend Stephanie his car on several occasions. That's because, unlike Ranger, he earns decent money in decent ways, and he always—or tries whatever he can to follow the law and abide the rules. He has hopes, dreams and desires like everybody else, but he's a rational, regular human being who leads a decent, respectable life. He doesn't want to taint his badge and reputation and consequently jeopardize his career.

Joe Morelli knows he have to do something. He knows he needs to take action. He knows he should tell Stephanie he knows about the baby. He knows he should demand her to take a parental DNA test as soon as possible. He knows he will ask her to have an abortion should the child be his. He knows he will probably have regrets. He knows he will always have doubts. He wishes he knows what's the right decision to make. He wishes he knows what's the right thing to do. He's still stunned and shocked by the news of their marriage, and he doesn't have the courage or energy to deal with this.

And surely Ranger would not marry Stephanie if the child isn't his, right?

Right?

Chapter 15: Dissolving

Dissolving
Morelli runs into Stephanie one morning at Tasty Bakery. They stand face to face frozen in awkward silence, both don't know and aren't sure what to say. She looks good and healthy, her baby bump is now showing, he notices, and that shining, extravagant diamond ring on her finger unsurprisingly screams money. Morelli tightens his hold of the doughnut bag in a sudden fit of resentment. He can tastes the familiar bitterness at the tip of his tongue. He can feel everyone else's eyes on his back. He knows he should nod politely, say "Good to see you, Stephanie" pleasantly and walk out of the door to carry on his life, but he can't tear his eyes away from her wedding ring. Porsches. Penthouse apartment. Cartier diamond ring. Cash. A lot of cash. What woman won't fall to her knees and purr in front of a man like that? What woman won't allow him steal kisses from her in a narrow shaded alley in broad daylight?

Morelli feels anger rising in the pit of his stomach. He can clearly see the uncertainty and vulnerability in Stephanie eyes. He knows he's making her nervous and probably starting frightening her. He knows the morning crowd of the bakery are waiting for the show to begin, but all of a sudden he doesn't care that much. He is the victim here, and his ex-on-and-off girlfriend owes him an explanation. She can't just walk out of his life like this without saying a word. He has the right to know, after all, whether the child is his or not. They were technically together at that time. Stephanie has to tell him when and how and why she cheated on him with Ranger and for how long. She has to tell him why she thought he didn't need to know about the child, her decision, and everything else. She has to tell him if the child is truly Ranger's. She has to tell him why she called Ranger instead of him. He wants to know. He needs to know. And he has to hear the answers in Stephanie's own words. He's about to speak when he senses the sudden silence inside the bakery. He raises his eyes from Stephanie and looks into a pair of all too familiar midnight dark brown eyes.

Ranger.

Chapter 16: Disappearing

Disappearing
You can't be ambitious without taking risks. And you have no one to blame but yourself for your fucked-up life. Ranger wraps an arm around Stephanie and gathers her near, his eyes calmly locking with Morelli's. He can feel Stephanie relaxing against him the moment she clings closer to his side. He knows she's nervous and a bit scared. He's glad he's here by her side when she finally comes face to face with the man she least wants to see. Their life has settled into a comfortable routine. She's taking good care of herself with their mothers' and Ella's help. Once or twice every week, she'll sense the calling of Boston Cream and rush over here, and he always sees to it that she's never alone and unaccompanied.

The corner of Ranger's lips tilts up slightly as he watches the fuming Italian tighten his jaw. Anger. Resentment. Envy. Hurt. Shame. And Fear. Joe Morelli is never difficult to read. The weird combination of his fiery Italian temper and indecisiveness may eventually harm both his career and personal life. But Morelli will have to find out and deal with his own problems and flaws since Ranger is not into giving free lessons to reluctant students. Maybe Stephanie does own Morelli an explanation. Maybe Morelli does have a right to know. Maybe Morelli does have a say in this. Maybe Morelli is the father of the baby. If Morelli is so badly in need of all the answers, all he has to do is speak up and ask away. Ranger thinks indifferently to himself as he almost casually takes his eyes off Morelli and looks down at Stephanie as she places a hand on his chest. He gives her a barely there yet assuring smile and again raises his eyes.

"Morelli." Ranger says quietly and curtly, and gently propels his wife toward the doughnut counter without waiting for the other man's response. And just as Ranger expected, Joe Morelli stares down at his shoes, silently counts to 10, and walks out of the bakery without a backward glance.

Chapter 17: Scent of Spring

Scent of Spring
27 hours of labour and the baby is born in a private clinic in Princeton, and the paternity test is performed immediately. Ranger doesn't really care about the answer, truth be told, but they need to be prepared for any possible legal or child custody issues in the future, and Stephanie needs to know. She's grateful and happy to become a part of his life and have his love, but still she regrets her foolishness and carelessness from time to time. She wants the child to be Ranger's. She needs the child to be his. She wants to be able to look into the baby's eyes without feeling guilty and ashamed of herself. She wants the three of them to be a true real family. She doesn't cry when the smiling grey-haired nurse hands her the baby though she wants to. And everybody laughs out loud when she wonders why the little boy looks so much like a baby monkey. Her sorrow and worry then quietly subdue when she looks up into Ranger's eyes and realizes that he loves their son no matter what.

3 days later, the result of the test comes back. The Batsperm won the battle. And the war.

~The End~

Chapter 18: Epilogue To Catch A Falling Star

~Epilogue~
To Catch A Falling Star...
Everyday, every night, the same doubt eats at his heart, the very question whispers in his head, and the face of the newborn child haunts him like a ghost. He can't sleep. He can't eat. He can't focus on his job. He can't concentrate on his life. He can't let go. He can't move on. He's trapped in a dilemma. He's caught in between. He knows he needs to seek the truth. But he's too afraid of the answer.

Who does the child look like? He wonders.

Does the child have dark brown eyes?

Does the boy have dark olive skin?

Does the child have long eyelashes?

Does the child have bright, charming smile?

Does the child have deep brown wavy hair?

Is the little boy his flesh and blood?

Does he want to fight for child custody?

Is he ready to be a father?

What will people think?

What if the boy is not his?

What if the boy is really his?

He wants to know. He needs to know. He dares not know. He can't afford to know. Everyday, every night, the same doubt eats at his heart, the very question whispers in his head, and the face of the beautiful little boy haunts him like a ghost. He can't sleep. He can't eat. He can't focus on his job. He can't concentrate on his life. He can't let go. He can't move on. He's trapped in a dilemma. He's caught in between. He knows he needs to seek the truth. But he's too afraid of the answer. He wants to...but he can't...he just can't.

Chapter 1: So You Favor Him, Huh?

Oracle 1: So You Favor Him, Huh?

"Get out." He says through tightly clenched teeth.

She looks up at him in wide-eyed bewilderment. He pulls her up roughly from the couch and pushes her toward the door. "I've had enough of all your fucking disasters and pickles in peanut butter. Now get out of my house and my life and go ask that fucking crazy bastard to take you back!" And just like that, he throws her out of his house into the cold winter night. He doesn't know why, but all his love for the woman he's been planning to marry for years just suddenly dies in a snap of Fate's fingers.

He can hear her shaking voice calling his name and crying. But he is way beyond caring. He gives a disgusted look at his messy kitchen. Who wants to marry a woman who's only good in bedroom and knows nothing about cleaning and cooking? The big orange dog used to be hers claws at the door and whines. "You know what buddy? I'm tired of you and all your chewing up my furniture and shoes too." He grabs the dog by the collar and throws it out to the woman shivering and crying at his front door and slams the door shut and locks it firmly.

She stands in the cold midnight air feeling desperate. She has listened to her Great Creator and followed Her Sacred Order to choose this man. And now he has thrown her out like a bag of garbage. She crumbles to the ground, holding the whimpering dog with both arms. She has no place to go and no one to turn to. She has given up her apartment months ago. And she has told him "It wouldn't be good for either of us if we keep seeing each other." and given back the key to his garage gate and 7th floor apartment. She stands up and starts walking, staring into the quiet empty street ahead but sees nothing.

Chapter 2: Let's See How Wrong You Can Be, Shall We

Oracle 2: Let's See How Wrong You Can Be, Shall We?

She walks on, trying all her might not to look back, with her heart aching. The dog follows her quietly with its bushy tail between the legs. So much for wanting to grow up, settle down and start a family. So much for choosing the right man and grow old with him. She wipes away a bitter tear. One minute you have a handsome sexy caring man who took your virginity when you were 16 and his promise to your future happiness. The next minute you end up wandering alone on the chilly midnight street after being kicked out by him. What's the problem with she? Has she done something wrong? No. She has done nothing but everything he wants and wishes.

She has gotten ready to find a decent job, to learn to cook and clean, and has already cut all the ties with the other man in her life no matter how much she lusts and craves for that perfect muscular Mocha Latte body and the cold non-existing heart. There's no future between them. She just knows it. He's nothing but a crazy bastard who never gives a damn to moral regulations and laws. He's nothing but a cold-blooded, calculating mercenary. He only ever wants sex without strings. He doesn't do stupid things like marriage, babies and relationship. He's not Burg. He's not Italian. She'll never be more than a loving amusement and never his priority. And his love comes with condoms instead of a ring.

She walks on. She has nowhere to go and no one to turn to. Her tears keep falling down on the silent cold street.

Chapter 3: Just Open Your Freaking Eyes and You'll

Oracle 3: Just Open Your Freaking Eyes and You'll See

"Have a good life." Just four soft, quiet, emotionless words. That's all he said when she went to see him for the last time and to return his key. No Babe. No Stephanie. No soul-melting open-your-eyes-now-and-see-my-love-please kiss. If she were to be honest with herself, she would admit that she's been feeling lost and empty ever since the moment she stepped out of his serene 7th floor apartment door in heartbroken tears. But, alas, she 's the indisputable Queen of Denial. So she just crawled back immediately into the familiar bed of the other man in her life, and tried all her best to forget the pair of beautifully cool midnight dark brown Cuban eyes in hot steaming Italian animal sex.

A noble priority. That's all she means to him. He didn't drop everything and fly to Hawaii when she called because he loves her. He didn't engage himself in that stupid fist fight in the hotel because he loves her. He never once stops her from returning to her extremely unhealthy fiasco of a relatinship because he NEVER loves her. She's nothing to him. She's nothing but a fucking noble priority. She wipes away those angry tears blocking her view but they stubbornly keep on coming. She sniffs and keeps on walking. She looks ahead and doesn't see anything.

The big orange dog turns its head and wiggles its tail. The man in the sleek black Porsche parked in a dark lane gets out of the car and comes over across the street silently.

Chapter 4: Sometimes Love Gets Tired

Oracle 4: Sometimes Love Gets Tired

He doesn't know why he bothers. She's no longer his obligation. But he keeps on walking silently and swiftly toward the weeping staggering woman. Does he still love her in his own way? He's not sure. How can you love without reservation a woman who always comes to you for help but crawls straight back into another man's bed immediately afterward, no matter how much you do for her? But he still loves her, and wants and needs to keep and see her safe, even if that means she'll be sleeping with the cop. Maybe that's mainly because he's sick mentally and emotionally. But now he's disgusted and tired. With himself or her? He has no idea. He doesn't know what she's doing out here in the dark cold winter night alone with a dog that can't even scare off a rat. But still he'll drive them back into the cop's embrace. Because that's the right thing to do. Yes, moral code can be a real bitch.

He wraps his hand around her arm and pulls her to a stop gently. She doesn't flinch or scream. He knows that's because she knew it was him, as always. He takes off his coat and put it around her shaking body. She bites her lower lip and lowers her head, refusing to meet his eyes and saying nothing.

"I'll give you both a ride back home." He says softly.

She stiffens at his words. They stand in uncomfortable silence for a long moment. The dog comes closer, looking up at him and whimpers as if pleading. It looks hungry, lost and scared. Suddenly he realizes what must have happened. "He threw you out?" He doesn't feel angry or anything. He knows this day will be coming. But it's much sooner than he expects. She hesitates but finally gives him a little nod. Without further words he takes her across the street to his car and quickly drives away.

Chapter 5: Do You Even Know What He Really Wants, B

Oracle 5: Do You Even Know What He Really Wants, Babe?

What does a man like him really want in his future wife? Great sex is clearly not enough, even if it sometimes comes with free beer, pizzas, meatball subs and doughnuts. He's from a traditional family in a traditional neighborhood. He may shrug and tell you with his charming smile that he has no problem living on Chinese take-outs, TV dinners and leftovers from your mom's dinner table. But sometimes, when he's shocked awake by your snoring in the middle of the night, he will look up at the ceiling and try all his might to ignore the aching longing in his heart for a woman who knows how to wash, iron and fold all his boxer shorts, to clean up the messy bathroom after her shower, to cook hot cheesy tasty pastas, and who doesn't snore.
All the moms with sharp, experienced eagle eyes in the neighborhood know what kind of men he really is as well as what knid of women he really wants. So they cross themselves whenever they see the young woman who blows up cars instead of popping out babies go into his two story house and stay the night. For they know these two are never meant to be. She's not destined to be the kind of women a traditional man needs. He's going to be tired of her one day when he finally realizes what he really wants. And now his most threatening competitor is gone. They know the young woman will soon lose some or even most of her appeal.
"Why don't you ladies just kick the poor girl out of the way and keep this handsome, highly praised police detective for your own daughters?" Some innocent soul may ask. "He has a friendly dog, a lovely house, a steady income and a promising future. He's such a catch and a keeper!"

But the moms just laugh and exchange meaningful looks with each other. They all know too much about the reputation of his family. And they are also quite familiar with his personal history. No. They definitely don't want this man to become the father of their grandchildren. Take a look at his elder brother and cousins. Then imagine the picture of him luring little girls into his father's dark garage, sweet talking teenage girls out of their panties and then leaving her high and dry. Oh they know how hard he fights the Morelli Curse. But just like a leopard can't change its spots, some men may never change. No rational mother in this neighborhood will ever let him put a ring on their precious daughters. Because no mother will ever let her child take that risk.

Chapter 6: Finally in the Batcave But Too Late?

Oracle 6: Finally in the Batcave But Too Late?

"I can't sleep." She says nervously in a tiny little voice from his bedroom door.

He looks at her for a brief moment and tilts his head slightly at the empty space on the king size bed beside him. She comes over and climbs in the unfamiliar bed quickly. She longs to snuggle closer into his arms and rest her aching head on his chest. Listening to his steady heartbeat while inhaling his beautiful scent always helps her sleep. But now something between them has already changed. She doesn't dare cross the invisible line. He just keeps on reading the hadrcover book and says nothing. She fidgets a little. She's dying to know the title of the book he's reading. She's dying to know why he took her here. She's dying to know if this place is the Batcave.

Yes, she knows all along that he doesn't share. But that didn't stop her from falling back into the familiar comfortable old pattern and sleeping with Morelli again, again, and again after what happened in Joyce's closet. No wonder he was cold and distant the next time they saw each other. He knew. Of course he knew. He's Batman. He knows everything. Everything. She wants to jump on top of him and shake him and yell at him that he's the one responsible for her unhealthy relationship. He allowed it to grow too strong to beat by sending her back to Morelli after their first night together so what did he expect? But somehow, deep down within her broken heart, she knows he did that only because she'd let go of him and told him "I can't do this" that fatal morning.

She turns to sleep on her side facing away from the man she suddenly realizes she has never stopped loving. She closes her eyes and curses her fate. She may finally come to the Batcave but now everything is too late. He's so close to her but too far away.

Chapter 7: Owner of a Lonely or Broken He

Oracle 7: Owner of a Lonely or Broken Heart?

She came home to find Rex dead. Her furry little pet, now cold and still and stiff, lay alone on the bottom of the glass aquarium. She fished out her phone with unsteady hand, put her finger on the speed dial button and suddenly froze. Now she had no right to call him any more. The phone slipped from her fingers and fell to the floor and she soon followed. Just like in soap operas, she wanted to cry but no tears came. She simply didn't have that much strength. The sadness and loneliness were too much to bear. She sat on the floor in her dark kitchen, listening to the sound of her heart shattering into thousands of tiny pieces and then jerks awake.

She's back in the all too familiar warm embrace with her face burying in his neck. It is still dark outside. The rain is pounding on the window panes and a phone is ringing. His arms tighten around her for a second before he reaches for his phone and starts talking into it softly. She closes her eyes, inhaling in his scent, and is almost asleep when he shakes her gently. "Babe, you need to call your father right now."

Chapter 8: It's a Small World, After All

Oracle 8: It's a Small World, After All

It begins to rain cats and dogs. And now little old Mrs. Paccino is really worried. Her dear husband Roberto died of heart attack last year, so she lives all alone in this cozy two story house. She likes to watch late night talk shows and loves even more to see the young couple living just across the street fight with each other. They do that all the time. But what happened earlier this night isn't right. She can't believe that nice looking police detective just threw out the girl and the dog like that. It is such a chilly night, and the poor girl didn't even have a heavy coat on. She takes one last look at all those bags of the girl's belongings scattered on the young man's front lawn. No, it is definitely not right for a man to treat a woman this way. She has to do something. With a determined look in her bright green eyes, she hobbles to the phone and called the Plum residence.

Stephanie lost her phone (along with her keys, mascara, lip gloss, stungun, handcuffs, driver's license, some cash and a half-eaten doughnut and the whole shoulder bag) when her crappy car blew up yesterday. And Morelli is not answering his phones. Helen and her mother start calling Valery and Stephanie's friends. Frank grabs his car key and runs out of the door. He drives all the way to Morelli's place and his blood runs cold at the sight of all his daughter's rain soaked shoes and clothes. He jumps out of his car and pounds on that little bastard's door.
All the people of the street are startled awake by the loud banging, shouting and cursing. Some of them call the police immediately. Two uniform cops soon arrive and try half-heartedly to hold back a furious Mr. Plum. They want to punch that cold-blooded bastard themselves badly. What kind of jerk will kick his girlfriend and his own dog out into such a cold winter night? In Mr. Plum's car, his cell phone finally stops ringing. Less than two minutes later, a shining black SUV parks behind the police car and a huge muscular man with a snake tattoo on his forehead gets out. He walks into the house, easily pries Frank Plum off Morelli and hands the older man a cell phone. He nods at the two cops briefly, stares at Morelli with cold expressionless eyes for a moment longer than comfortable, and leaves as quietly as he came after Frank finishes his conversation with Stephanie and hands back the phone.

Little old Mrs. Paccino watches the big man in black get in the SUV and drive away. She gives herself a relieved smile. Now she's sure the girl and the big orange dog are safe, she can finally go to bed.

Chapter 9: Love is a Complicated Thing

Oracle 9: Love Is a Complicated Thing

Stephanie assures her crying mother for the last time that she's safe and ends the call. It doesn't take long for her headache to return. She's pretty sure some of her clothes and most of her shoes are ruined, and she has no idea how to replace them. She doesn't have too much money in her bank account. Although she didn't have to pay any rent after moving into Morelli's house, she had to pay her share of the living expenses and buy one crappy car after another. No more sleek black cars popped out of thin air at her door. No more trackers disguised as pens or lip glosses materialized in her shoulder bag. No more huge muscular intimidating backups clad in black came to the rescue whenever she was in trouble. Just like what she asked. She still remembers clearly the indecipherable look in Ranger's eyes when she told him to stop tracking her and giving her any help before walking out of his door that day. But she knew there was always a tracker on her car. Because from time to time, she would catch a glimpse of the black SUV discreetly following her around the unsafe parts of the city. But she lost her last tracker when that crazy FTA blew up her car yesterday. Now there's no more link between she and Ranger.

She sat down on the couch beside her snoring dog and looks around the living room. Everything is plain, simple but tasteful. She'd love to stay and explore the whole house. She knows he'll send her and Bob back to her parents' first thing in the morning. And then they'll keep on living their separate lives. But still she dreams for the impossible. She yawns and closes her tired eyes. She's more exhausted than she realizes. Gradually she falls sound asleep, and doesn't even stir when the man in her dream comes over and gently carries her back into his bedroom.

Chapter 10: Do We Really Deserve A Second Chance?

Oracle 10: Do We Really Deserve A Second Chance?

Stephanie wakes up alone on Ranger's side of the bed, feeling warm and safe. The rain has stopped sometime shortly before dawn, but the sky is still heavily cloudy. She stretches and yawns lazily, and soon finds her old RangeMan uniforms, panties and bras included, inside a black duffle bag on one of the two armchairs in the bedroom. Her fingers linger on the clothes she left in the 7th floor apartment for a long moment before she finally goes into the spacious bathroom for a hot, long shower. No, still no bathtub for Ranger. She reaches out for his Bvlgari and her hand falters. She remembers she never once asks him what he meant by "I love you in my own way". She blinked a few times, braces herself, and takes holds of the bottle firmly. Forget it. It doesn't matter any more. Again Stephanie tells herself. But she knows, as always, she's just lying.

She joins Ranger at the table and they eat breakfast in silence. She scarfs down the still lukewarm whole wheat blueberry pancakes and is seriously tempted to lick her plate. She has been missing Ella's cooking like crazy. The big orange dog has already gulped down a bowl of unseasoned boiled vegetables and dry dog food, and is now sitting beside the table, happily thumping its brush of a tail against the floor. All the furnitures in the living room are intact without one single teeth or claw mark on them. A small smile creeps on Stephanie's face. Both human beings and animals tend to be on their best behavior around Ranger. Her thoughts drift to the half destroyed counch in Morelli's living room, and Morelli's anger-contorted face pops into her mind suddenly.

She recalls what happened eight and a half hours ago and feels like throwing up. She quickly takes a deep breath to calm herself, and then erases all the unpleasant memories from her mind. She knows she'll have to face the ugly reality eventually, but now she's really not yet ready to deal with it. She doesn't want to go back to her parent's house to be surrounded by endless, merciless gossips and rumours. She doesn't want to step into Pino's or any other places to come face to face with Joseph Morelli. She wants to hide from all those watchful eyes. She wants to hide from the outside world. She just wants to stay here. With Ranger. But she knows that's nothing more than an impossible dream. She looks up from her empty plate as the familiar soft composed voice snaps her out of those painful thoughts.

"You can stay here if you don't want to move back with your parents." Her tears start to fall.
Ricardo Carlos Manoso gently gathers Stephanie Plum into his arms. All of a sudden he feels like sighing. He has no idea why he loves this weeping woman so deeply. Maybe he's really sick. Both mentally and emotionally. He tightens his arms around her shaking body. And finally lets out a sigh.

Chapter 11: The Bridge of No Return

Oracle 11: The Bridge of No Return

Ranger knows he's deeply in love and probably sick. He is also aware of the fact that he doesn't always know everything. Is Stephanie still in love with Morelli? Will she try to go back to Morelli this time? Can a woman with sanity really fall in love with the man who molested her? Can a woman with sanity really fall in love with the man who took her virginity and then broadcasted it to the whole world by writing dirty poems about her on public bathroom walls? Can woman with sanity really fall in love with the man who never supports or respects her right to make her own choices about her life? He honestly doesn't know the answers to those questions.

She can't stop fighting with Morelli. She can't stop going back to Morelli. Her guilt and obsession with Morelli are almost irrational and crazy. Maybe she's a victim of Stockholm Syndrome. Maybe she's a victiom of her own twisted version of Virgin Complex. Maybe she's sick, both mentally and emotionally, just like him. Maybe they should both go see a shrink and get some professional help.

He still has no idea what made him leave his 7th floor apartment to drive through the cold dark Trenton last night. He still has no idea what brought him to that empty deserted street to find her. Was it luck? Was it chance? Or was it fate? He may never know the answer. But the only thing Ranger is sure about is: what he and Stephanie now have between them is even more fragile than a newborn baby. If she once again chooses to go back to Morelli, all his love for her will die completely, and he'll cut her from his life forever.

He's just human, and he does have his limitation. He may be deeply in love and more than probably sick, but he's never stupid.

Chapter 12: No Remorse, Whatsoever

Oracle 12: No Remorse, Whatsoever

Everyone in Pino's freezes the moment Valerie's open palm smacks into Joseph A. Morelli's already bruised face. Saint Valerie, Stephanie Plum's elder sister, the beautiful, perfect blonde who overshadows all Burg girls like the sun outshines zillions of stars, then spits on his face before calmly morphs back into the 183-pound mom of 4 girls, says thank you politely and takes her three take-out pizzas from the stunned waitress behind the counter, and walks out of Pino's as if nothing has ever happened. One by one, the police officers, the firefighters, the EMTs, other diners from the Burg and the owner start to clap their hands. Without a word, Morelli turns and takes his leave. He'll have to go get some fast food for brunch. He's no longer welcome in his favorite pizza place.

Words not only travel faster but are also much more powerful than nuclear missiles here in Trenton. He didn't have a chance to close his eyes and get some sleep after the fiasco because of the endless calls from his upset mother and female relatives. He is also not welcome in Stephanie's favorite bakery any more. None of his neighbors (especially the four old ladies who helped pick up and put all Stephanie's rain-soaked belongings into new, unbroken plastic bags) talked, nodded or even recognized his existence this morning. Just like his colleagues. Both Eddie and Carl got to punch him twice before being pulled back by fellow officers. And someone grabbed the last two doughnuts the second he reached out for them.
Joseph A. Morelli watches Valerie Kloughn drive away, and suddenly realizes he has never really loved Stephanie Plum. Yes, she's fun and cute and good in bed, but she's never the girl he really wants. He's been always wanting a girl like Valerie. He wants a girl who can cook, clean, sew on a button and iron. He wants a girl who knows to stay safely away from the dangerous world and all those crazy criminals outside. He wants a girl who wants to have babies and can't wait to become a perfect housewife. He wants a girl who never dreams for the impossible and realizes human being can't fly. He stands all alone in the parking lot, think about all the time he wasted on the wrong girl, and finally blows out a defeated sigh.
He should have broken up with her a long time ago.

Chapter 13: Wanna Do Your Crying in the Rain?

Oracle 13: Wanna Do Your Crying in the Rain?

Stephanie Plum wants to outshine instead of being overshadowed and ignored. She wants to be different but is fearful of being unique. She wants to fly but is frightened that she'll only fall. She's too proud and stubborn to admit her faults and listen to advice and reason. She hides in the Land of Denial whenever reality is not to her liking. She is unhappy but not at all confused. She knows exactly what her real problem is. But she's just too much afraid to face and deal with it.

She knows whom she really loves but is not brave enough to tell. She wants to trust her heart to him but is too scared. She needs to know what he really wants from her but dares not ask. So she keeps on crawling back to Morelli. Why? Because Italian wild animal sex is eazy and costs you nothing. It never asks for your heart and soul in return. It allows you to forget your painful longing in the moment of passion. And it assures you anything is better than a possible rejection from the man you love. And all these years she has been blaming him for sending her back to Morelli and using it as the excuse to run away from him. Even though she has known all along she is the only one to blame.

She needed to repair her relationship with Morelli for the same reason she opened her eyes and picked the slip of paper with Morelli's name on it. They were both losers. They were both lonely. They knew each other. They shared a history together. So why couldn't they have some fun together?

Morelli is just like her. He is Italian, he is familiar, he is Burg, and they both have bad reputation. He is the son of a notorious family who used to have a famous wandering dick. No normal, sensible, practical Burg women will ever want him for a husband. She is the good for nothing who couldn't prevent her husband from fucking another woman on her own dining table.

Ranger, on the other hand, is a dream, a fantasy, and powerful magic. And magic can't be real. And why will a man like Ranger want a relationship with her? She is a magnet for disasters. She blows up cars and houses. She had no real skills. She is a plain, boring divorcée who has no bright future. No doubt he will soon grow tired and lose all interest in her once he spends enough time in bed with her. Surely she is no competition to all the other women in Ranger's life. She knows for a fact that she will never be half as smart as sexy as the perfect Jeanne Ellen Burrows.

So that day a couple years ago, after their first night together, she made up her mind to wake up from her dream and repair her relationship with Morelli. She let go of Ranger's shirt and told him, "I can't do this. This isn't going to work." And Ranger respected her choice and let her go. But her attempt to build a normal relationship with Morelli failed like a really bad joke. And several months ago, she made that same stupid mistake again. She chose to cut all the ties between she and Ranger and try a future with Morelli, and ended up being thrown out of his house like a worthless piece of kitchen garbage.

Ranger gathers Stephanie in his arms. She buries her face in Ranger's chest, wrap her arms around his waist and cries all her bitter tears out. Now that there's no more distance between them, she can't tell if the enchanting scent of Bvlgari is coming for him or herself. She realizes she can no longer ignore the tiny but stern voice in her heart and pretend and lie to herself. Ranger takes her in and helps her out even if she doesn't deserve it. And the least she can do is to be honest with Ranger and herself. She takes a deep breath and softly asks the question she's been dreaded to ask.

"What did you mean by 'I love you in my own way'?"

Chapter 14: What to Do When the Truth Comes Out

Oracle 14: What to Do When the Truth Comes Out

"It meant I could only love you as much as you allowed me to, Stephanie. You had already chosen Morelli and drawn a line between us the day you told me it would not work between us. You didn't want me to cross the line and I respected your decision. I told you my love didn't come with a ring because you never really wanted a ring from me. All you ever wanted was Morelli. You couldn't live with him under the same roof for more than three months and you kept on fighting with each other all the time. But no matter what happened, you always went back to him."

Ranger falls silent for a moment. He has never felt so tired and exhausted, but he knows he has to finish this conversation. Even if it may end up hurting them both and keeping them apart forever. "If you truly love Morelli and need to go back to him, please tell me now. I love you deeply but I'm just human, and I do have my limitation. I can't keep on doing this. Not anymore."
Stephanie looks at Ranger with wild eyes and starts laughing so hysterically that she can hardly breathe. "But I never love Morelli," She finally gasps, "I've been in love with you, like, forever!" Tears fall down her cheeks like waterfalls as her whole body shakes uncontrollably. She thinks of all the time she wasted and laughs even harder. She wants to strangle and apologize to herself at the same time for being such a stupid coward. All she had to do was to be honest with her feelings but instead she ran straight into the Land of Denial with her tail between her legs without a backward glance.

Just how cruel can Fate be, really?

Chapter 15: Now We've Come This Far

Oracle 15: Now We've Come This Far

Stephanie keeps on laughing and crying at the same time like crazy for a few more minutes, and then slowly calms down in Ranger's arms. Her eyes are all puffy and swollen. Her throat is sore and hoarse. She surely has used up an entire lifetime's supply of tears. The unbearable hurt and heavy burden in her heart are finally gone, and now she feels eerily like a stranger to herself. She's tired, exhausted but relieved. And she's somewhat nervous, too. She can no longer be the irresponsible Queen of Denial. She needs to have enough courage to stop copying everyone else and learn to be herself. She needs to be brave enough to grow up and go after all her "ridiculous" and "unrealistic" dreams. And she will have no choice but to face and handle all the challenges and uncertainties that will soon follow, and most important of all...
"We both need to learn to talk about our feelings." Ranger tells her quietly.

Chapter 16: How Did We Fall Into This Circumstance?

Oracle 16: How Did We Fall Into This Circumstance?

Helen Plum hates feeling like a failure.

Calmly she takes Stephanie's clothes out of the dyer and starts sorting them into different piles with experienced, steady hands. Her heart is still aching but her tears are already dry. None of her younger daughter's clothes are expensive or of high quality. Some of the almost worn-out t-shirts have unwashable stains on them, and she can easily spot all the holes, tears and rips on nearly every pair of the jeans. Stephanie's life as a bounty hunter is far from pleasant or enjoyable. She faces and deals with dangerous and crazy people on a regular basis. She can barely earn enough money to keep herself from starving to death. And things got even worse when she could no longer earn some extra cash by working part time for her friend Ranger.

Helen puts the neatly folded piles of Stephanie's clothes into different clean washing baskets and lets out a tired sigh. How she wishes she knows what and whom Stephanie really wants. She doesn't know what happened between Stephanie and Ranger many months ago. She's still not quite sure if Stephanie chose to move in with Morelli because of lack of rent money or because of love. Hell, she doesn't even know if Stephanie has ever loved Morelli. Right now, Helen Plum only knows that she will spend the rest of her afternoon mending and ironing Stephanie's clothes, and that she's really, really glad that Valerie slapped and spit on Morelli's face in Pino's.

Chapter 17: Time to Learn to Survive

Oracle 17: Time to Learn to Survive

Stephanie tries not to squirm or fidget on the wooden counter stool. She absentmindedly toys with a stem of cilantro and sneaks another peek at Ranger. She has never felt so awkward in her life before. Right now, Ranger is chopping tomatoes, mushrooms and other healthy ingredients of their dinner with an expert hand in the spacious, bright, well-equipped kitchen. Unlike her, he apparently knows how to use a knife without cutting himself, and he looks good in that black apron too. Stephanie is not very surprised that Ranger can cook. She always knows he's a man of many talents. But still, seeing this side of Ranger is just like catching an unexpected glimpse of the dark side of the moon. Stephanie hasn't fully recovered from the shock of hearing Ranger telling her he will make dinner. And the drastic but delicate change of their relationship makes her nervous, worried and a bit scared at the same time.

They haven't really talked about it though. Ranger was called away on RangeMan business shortly after their conversation. Stephanie found the book he'd been reading and was immediately fascinated by it after the first few pages. She spent the afternoon curling on the couch reading and laughing with Bob snoring peacefully at her feet. She couldn't remember when was the last time she'd felt so relaxed and unguarded. She was so absorbed in the book that she actually yelped and fell to the floor when she suddenly looked up to find Ranger standing right in front of her. Ranger gave her a soft amused "babe" and an almost undetectable shake of his head before reaching out a large warm hand to pull her to her feet. And at that moment, it felt like everything was back to normal: nothing bad had ever happened between Stephanie and Ranger, she had never made the stupidest mistake of her life, and she had never hurt the most important person in her life.

Stephanie picks the cilantro leaves off the stem. No, she is not that naïve. What is done cannot be undone. She will have to pay for her own mistakes like everybody else . And all she can do now is to grasp her precious second chance and never let go of her dreams again.

Chapter 18: You've Got to Believe

Oracle 18: You've Got to Believe

Stephanie wonders where she should sleep tonight and turns on the sleek state-of-the-art German dishwasher in the modern spotless kitchen.

Ranger's house is located in a small newly developed upscale neighborhood about 20 minutes' drive from the RangeMan building, and the four bedrooms all have their private bathrooms. Stephanie's tastefully decorated bedroom is comfy, spacious and has a 42" plasma TV. But earlier today, when she lay alone in the dark bedroom, she felt so lonely that she couldn't sleep. She kept on tossing and turning for half an hour before finally gave up and went to the master bedroom to find Ranger. The same thing will only happen again if she chooses to sleep in that room tonight. She just knows it. And she can't just tell Ranger that she'd like to sleep in his bedroom or follow Ranger into his room when bedtime finally arrives.

Why? Because things are not that simple.

Even if Ranger has told her he loves her deeply, even if she has told Ranger he's the one she really loves, she still feels nervous, awkward and uneasy around Ranger. She knows this is what happens when you make a foolish mistake and hurt someone you love dearly. You will feel that you can't be sure about anything any more. Because what you had between the two of you has changed into something much more precious and fragile. And it will take a while for your friendship, emotion, affection and love for each other to settle back down to normal.

Stephanie looks at an empty spot on the kitchen shelf and finds that it is the perfect place for a Batman cookie jar. She lost her old cookie jar the day she went to her parents' house to bury Rex in the backyard. One of her crazy skips broke into her apartment and smacked it along with all her cups, bowls and plates against the kitchen wall. But strangely, Stephanie wasn't too upset. She sliced her finger on a piece of glass when picking up the business card Ranger had left inside the jar a long time ago, but she didn't even feel the sharp pain at all. She just drove back to her parent's right away, went up to her old room, and placed the blood-stained card inside Rex's glass aquarium. So, there is still a connection between she and Ranger, after all.
A small smile blossoms on Stephanie's face as she realizes what she has to do. Ranger is right, as usual. They both need to learn to talk about their feelings. And she will start learning right now.

Chapter 19: Just Do It

Oracle 19: Just Do It

Doubt and fear sneak into Stephanie's heart just as she is about to step out of the kitchen. She becomes nervous and is on the verge to second guess her decision to talk to Ranger when a fit of sudden self-loathing snaps her out of her worries. She leans one shoulder against the wall and lets out a sigh of frustration. No wonder she is the world's no.1 loser, failure and disappointment. She's nothing but a big fat foolish coward who never hesitates to make mistakes but is always afraid to do the right things. Stephanie rolls her eyes at herself and tries to bring her focus back to the task at hand. She knows she has to talk to Ranger no matter what. Maybe she really is not good enough for Ranger. But so what? He did tell her he loves her, did he not?

So, how do you tell the man you love you'd like to sleep with him? Stephanie asks herself. And how do you tell him that by "sleep" you really mean "sleep" not, you know, "sleep"? Is there any way to do that without feeling awkward or stupid? Do you need to be more specific? Should you say you'd like to "sleep in his bed" instead? Or should you just tell him that you need to sleep beside him because otherwise you won't be able to sleep? And do you need to tell him that this doesn't mean you don't want to "sleep" with him? Stephanie places her hand over her eyes when they start twitching. And then all of a sudden, she becomes angry with herself.

Just shut up, woman up and go ask him for heaven's sake. He did say he loves you, remember? Stephanie tells herself harshly, takes a couple deep breaths to calm down, braces herself, and goes into the living room to talk to Ranger.

Chapter 20: Talk to Me Like Lovers Do

Oracle 20: Talk to Me Like Lovers Do

"Just shut up, woman up and go ask him for heaven's sake. He did say he loves you, remember?"

Both Ranger and Bob turn their heads as Stephanie's harsh voice sounds from the kitchen. Bob the dog soon loses interest, yawns, and puts its head back onto Ranger's lap. Ranger, on the other hand, does nothing to hide the hint of a smile on his face. Yes, he does miss the goofy Stephanie. And sometimes, in the past few months, when he stepped inside his silent 7th floor apartment in the middle of the night, he would think of the night when he'd driven nine long hours (half of it in pouring rain, he remembers clearly) to get home and found Stephanie in his bed. And then, all of a sudden, he would think of the moment when she let Morelli hug and kiss her, lead her away to his car and drive her back to his small nice cozy two-story Burg house after waving a short goodbye to Sally Sweet. No, that particular scene never ever made Ranger feel lonely. But maybe, just maybe, it did make him feel a bit used and...betrayed.

A mercenary complains about being used and taken for granted? Really? Ranger's smile deepens as he silently mocks himself. Glad you still have feelings like an average ordinary human being, Mr. Manoso. By the way, love is never demanding a return, remember?

The soft sound of hesitated footsteps and clothes ruffling snaps Ranger from his thoughts. He looks up and finds a slightly fidgeting Stephanie approaching him slowly. He wonders what she wants to say to him. No. he's not Batman. And he doesn't always know everything. He doesn't know what's on Stephanie's mind right now, but somehow deep down in Ranger's heart he knows Stephanie will never go back to Morelli ever again. Don't ask him how. He just knows it. Ranger waits patiently for a couple minutes and decides to jump in and lend a helping hand. He raises a brow at Stephanie. "Babe?"

Stephanie bites her lips nervously, takes a deep breath to steady herself, and finally opens her mouth and in a tiny shaky voice quickly lets out a string of words. "I love you and I really can't sleep without you and I will never go anywhere if you allow me to stay with you and can I sleep in your room tonight?" She then adds helpfully, hopefully and pleadingly, "Please?"

Chapter 21: Lay by My Side, Fear Not Tonight

Oracle 21: Lay by My Side, Fear Not Tonight

When did their friendship truly begin? Ranger looks into Stephanie's uncertain eyes and wonders. The day Professor Henry Higgins and Eliza Doolittle sat on the curb outside her moron of a skip's house in the chilly rain waiting for the cops, the EMTs and Al to arrive? Or the moment he looked at the check she'd told Connie to give him and smiled? When did it evolve into something deeper and more complicated? How did it grow so strong and so frighteningly demanding that it scared the both of them into making wrong decisions? What does she want in her life? What does she really need? Is he ready to offer the things she wants? Can he give her what she needs? Will he be able to change for her? How long will it take for the lingering invisible barriers lurking between them to finally dissolve and melt away? And what if things don't work out between them?

There is only one way to find out.

Without a word Ranger nods his head and reaches out a hand. Timidly but without hesitation Stephanie takes hold of his hand and sits down beside him on the couch. Ranger locks his intense dark brown eyes with her clear blue ones and softly asks, "Do you still need a dog, a house, a couple kids, and a diamond ring?"

Stephanie blinks, and blinks. She opens her mouth to answer but then closes it again in near-panic. Damn. She's really not ready for that question.

Chapter 22: The Things That Dreams Are Made Of

Oracle 22: The Things That Dreams Are Made Of

A dog, a house, a couple kids, and a diamond ring. The four essential elements of any standard Burg girl's ultimate dream. Stephanie desperately tries to think. Does she really need these things? Does she ever want them? Did she marry Orr for them? Did she choose to move in with Morelli because of them? Does she truly believe these things will make her happy, fulfilled, and complete?

Here in the Burg, a stubborn, old-fashioned, conservative Catholic neighborhood, marriage is not an option but a must, and "practical" is everybody's middle name. Everyone knows that real life is no fairy tale, and love is too overrated. Nearly every little boy wants a wife who can cook pastas and keep the house clean. Almost every little girl grows up dreaming of marrying a man with a steady income instead of a dark, handsome, foreign prince. By the time Stephanie graduated from college, nearly all her friends were married, and some of them had already popped out two or even four kids. It was all natural for her to find someone with a decent job and settle down like everyone else did. And as a sly, ambitious rookie lawyer, Dickie Orr seemed like a quite reasonable choice. By the time she got divorced and became a bounty hunter, Joseph Morelli happened to be the only single male left in the neighborhood who was not mentally challenged or psychologically disturbed. And she was (and maybe still is) not good enough for Ranger...

She did not marry Orr or move in with Morelli because of love, trust, or companionship. She chose the road everyone took because she didn't want to stand out in the crowd and become a lonely joke. Stephanie tightens her grasp of Ranger's hand and feels the calming strength and warmth radiating off him. It is so hard and embrassing to strip all those layers of lies and excuses you wrapped around yourself over the years and bare your soul to the person you love. But no matter how frightened Stephanie is, she has to do it. Now.

"I...I just don't want to be alone."

Chapter 23: The Power of Love

Oracle 23: The Power of Love

Stephanie looks into Ranger's intense but serene dark brown eyes and feels dazed. She has never wanted something or someone so much in her life before, and now the intensity of all her deeply hidden emotion for Ranger scares her. It's impossible to find two people more different than she and Ranger. He's an amazing and determined success story. She's nothing but a pitiful failure and joke. He thinks ahead, plans and fights for his future. She's too much a coward to live her own dreams and only barely survives the moment. What if things don't work out between them? What if Ranger gets bored of her? What if Ranger meets someone else? Someone pretty, someone smart, someone much, much better? What does Ranger really want from her? What does Ranger really see in her? Can they really share a life together? Is love enough to overcome all their differences? Is it true that love will conquer everything and anything? Dare she seize the day, live her life, and take the risk?

This is exactly why she has been so afraid of making commitment. Stephanie reminds herself. You either win all or lose everything. And you will start thinking so hard and worrying so much that you'll end up with a massive headache while smelling your brain burning. But now her commitment phobia doesn't bother her any more. Stephanie knows she only has one more shot left in life, and she has already made up her mind. For the first time in her life, she wants to be brave and fearless, and true to herself. And that is the reason why she feels utterly relieved instead of panic when Ranger pulls her into his arms and softly tells her, "We'll make it work."
There's always a price for love. And she's finally ready to pay for it.

Chapter 24: It's Too Damn Complicated

Oracle 24: It's Too Damn Complicated

He stops at a red light and sees the familiar sleek, shining, expensive black car drive by. Out of pure curiosity he turns to follow the Porsche from a discreet distance when the traffic light changes, and parks more than half a block away when the Turbo 911 pulls to a stop in front of the recently rebuilt bonds office. Unconsciously he narrows his eyes and clenches his teeth as he watches Ranger get out of the car, open the passenger door for Stephanie and help her out. All of a sudden he can feel both his rage and blood pressure rising. Yes, he knows he kicked Stephanie out of his house and his life and told her to crawl back to Ranger. But honestly, he wasn't expecting this. Not so soon, at least.

No, he's definitely not feeling jealous. Bitter, yes, and maybe more than a bit angry, but no, absolutely not jealous. He sits motionlessly in silence watching Connie and Lula race out of the bonds office to wrap Stephanie in their arms. One or two minutes later, Vinnie sticks his head out of the door, say something to Stephanie, and disappears back inside. He tightens both his fists as he sees Ranger sling an arm around a smiling Stephanie's shoulders and walk her into the building. No, he honestly does not regret what he did. He's really really very sure he doesn't want her back. Not in his bed, nor in his life. Yes, she's fun and sexy and easy to please, but she can't cook, she can't clean, she's never what he wants. She will never be able to give him what he needs. They are just so wrong for each other. Yes, he knows he should be happy that she did exactly what he told her to do. Yes, he knows he should be happy to see her and Ranger together. But still he feels his heart and soul burning with something he has no reason to have.
In great frustration Joseph Morelli starts his car and drives away. He tries his best not to turn his head to look at the fancy luxury car he can never afford, or to think of the woman he just let go. No. Again and again he firmly tells himself. He's definitely not feeling jealous.

Chapter 25: Of Mother and Child

Oracle 25: Of Mother and Child

Helen Plum doesn't know what to say to her younger daughter. She just holds Stephanie tight in her arms for one long minute. She's definitely not a hugger or a kisser. She is never very good at properly and openly showing her feelings and emotions. She's also really not good with words, and tends to babble a lot when she's too upset or nervous. She always expresses her worries and concerns for her family by constantly nagging and reminding them of just about everything, and the only comfortable way for her to show her love for them is to feed them and take care of their everyday needs. Now Helen's happy, simply happy to see her daughter safe and sound, and she's so grateful that Ranger found Stephanie that cold rainy night and took her in. She quickly blinks back her tears and puts on a warm smile as she releases Stephanie and turns to face Ranger. "Come inside, please. Dinner will be ready in a minute." She spent the whole afternoon cooking and baking after Frank received Stephanie's call sometime around noon. All of Stephanie's washed, mended and ironed clothes are already packed, and the three dozens of chocolate chip cookies and the moist chocolate layer cake (yes, with extra chocolates) she baked for Stephanie are bagged, too. Helen also prepared a plate of warm chicken salad and some oven baked vegetables beside the usual pot roast, gravy, mashed potatoes and pineapple upside down cake.

She then hurries into the kitchen while, for once, her mother and husband take turn instead of elbowing each other out of the way to hug and kiss Stephanie and shake hands with Ranger (well, Grandma does get to give him a hug and a kiss on his cheek, mind you). A happy smile blossoms on Helen's face as she looks up and sees the clock. 5:59. Perfect. The pot roast won't be too dry tonight.

Chapter 26: Time to Take That Train

Oracle 26: Time to Take That Train

Joe Morelli tries his best to move on to chase his dreams and live his life. But he can't help perking up his ears whenever people mention Stephanie's name in their conversations, or turning his head to stare at any sleek black cars driving by. Sometimes when he lets himself into his silent empty house after a long day's work, he will think of Bob and regrets his decision to get rid of the goofy playful dog. And he also misses Pino's subs, Pino's pastas, and Pino's pizzas with extra garlic and tomato sauce. His mother and aunts have finally forgiven him for what he did that night, and started to introduce new love interests to him. But so far, none of the blind or arranged dates work. The nurse from St. Francis talks too much. The sales lady from Macy's looks too much like a fish. And the teacher from the elementary school—well, he really, really doesn't want to talk about the teacher from the elementary school, or even thinks of her. Terry is now engaged to a "rising star" of another famed Mafia family, and he is not yet desperate enough to hook up with Joyce Barnhardt. Most of his fellow cops still look at him with disgust or treat him as if he doesn't exist, and that's probably the reason why he hasn't had a taste of the police station's usual morning doughnuts for ages. Someone will always grab the last one before he reaches out his hand. Just like now.

Morelli blows out a defeated sigh and sits down at his desk. Maybe it's time to think about a transfer to another city. Somewhere nearby and not too far from his family, but far enough that he won't come face to face with Stephanie. Yes, he's been trying all he can to avoid her. He still has no idea what to do or say if they finally run into each other, though he somehow thinks she should thank him for putting an end to their relationship and thus enabled her to be with Ranger. He unwraps his sandwich, takes a bite, and swallows as he listens half-heartedly to the happy chatting and laughter around him. But no matter how hard he tries, the lump in his throat just won't go away.

~The End~
